Supposedly it was to prevent spying on the opposing faction to scout weak points and then swapping back over to relay this information to attacking forces.

I had both Horde and Alliance characters on one account starting in December 2004, so I'm not sure why you think that isn't Blizzlike. However, I believe there was a time gate on being able to switch from one faction character to the opposing faction.
