I'd like to get some confirmation regarding PvP flagging. Today I was farming some devilsaurs and whenever there was competition for it I'd turn my pvp on to hopefully get competition flagged and killed and get my devilsaur. Doing this I can make sure that person on the spawn spot next to me cannot spam TAB and a damaging ability to target devilsaur and tag it before me - his tab would target me, he'd hit me, he'd get flagged and I'd have a chance to kill him. If the devilsaur spawns and I tag it, people tend to attack me to kill me together with the devilsaur - in this case I just vanish and kill the person who now also has devilsaur on him because he also tried to tag it. Also if a devilsaur spawns and the rogue is faster than me, tags it, starts attacking it but is dumb enough to turn his blade flurry on, he gets tagged and I kill him.
After doing this for about 2-3 hours I get whispered by a GM that I'm being warned that I'm abusing a bug, that my account now "has a warning" for bug abuse and that if similar behavior continues I'd get banned. I was not aware that PvP tagging was in any way bannable. I made sure to read the rules when I made the account and it said nothing about PvP tagging being against the rules.
Upon further research I found out in another forum post that walking in another persons AoE to flag him is indeed against the rules:
posted by Tyche in https://forum.elysium-project.org/topic/30299-alliance-griefing/?page=2
First of all, the GM said that I was warned and my account flagged for bug abuse. However this seems wrong as it's clearly stated here that it's not a bug.
Secondly, GM told me I'd get banned for this. Again, another story is here on the forums:
Did I get advised that it's considered griefing? No. I got told I was exploiting a bug.
Here's the screenshot of the full GM conversation:
In the start I doubted that it was really a GM because there was no blue blizzard icon, I guess it just didn't exist in the vanilla. I was happy with the answers GM provided me with until I've read this forum post. After reading forum post I'm starting to doubt everything he said, as most of it is, according to the forum post, wrong. GM also doubted that I'm farming devilsaurs and obviously thought that I'm here just to kill players, while I had 22 devilsaur leathers in my bags all collected within 3 hours of this GM conversation.
So I'd like some confirmations, first of all:
If my sole purpose is to get the devilsaur, and that means standing on a devilsaur spawn spot with pvp on in hopes that competition gets flagged and killed. Is that allowed or not, since the sole purpose is not pvp, it's the devilsaur. All those people can just go away for all I care and I won't chase them if they don't touch my devilsaur. Today they seemed to prefer staying and getting themselves flagged with blade flurry.
Secondly:
If this is not bug abuse but griefing and not bannable according to the forum post, then why does my account, according to a GM, now have a warning for abusing a bug, and a threat to be banned?
While these first two concerns are not very important, as I obviously won't be doing this anymore knowing the risk, I want to ask the most important question here:
If a random alliance who doesn't like me decides that he wants me banned, finds me with my PvP on after I leave battleground, throws a blizzard on me, gets himself flagged and then reports me, is there a chance I get banned for it? Now that my account already has a warning I'm really worried about it. A GM already answered this with a no, but seeing how other information provided collide with what's written on the forum I'd like a confirmation. I really care for my account, I've invested a lot of time in it, never received any warnings or anything similar in 11 years of playing World of Warcraft on multiple servers, and would hate to lose it over a warning for something that I wasn't even aware was wrong, something that's been allowed on retail for a decade.
