i changed the name like the website told me to. am i supposed to open the wtf and change anything inside it?

My girlfriend and I are new players and we can't seem to get past the log in screen. We've both changed the WTF file exactly as it asks, and yet we're being auto "disconnected from server" before we can even click on a server. Help?
