My Client is only supporting 1280x1024

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

why is my client only supporting the resolution 1280x1024? I saw people playing with atleast 1600x900. Is there a command to "activate" those resolutions?

I have a similar problem, my resolution is stuck in 1920x1080, which is bad because my pc is garbage and it turns the game unplayable

If you wish to change your resolution manually try this :

Go to the "WTF" folder and edit the file "config.wtf" with notepad
Find the gxResolution line , for example mine is :

SET gxResolution "1920x1080"

If I wanted to switch to 1600x900 I need to simply edit this to :

SET gxResolution "1600x900"

Just save the file and relaunch wow

With luck this will allow you to force the resolutions you want :)

Sadly this didnt work for me. Is it because im using a client from a different source? Well, i was forced to tbh, since 90% of the DL links on the homepage are dead, and those who work are torrent links.

What if you try updating your graphics driver? What's the size of your screen?

I got the same issue, i cant get a resolution higher than 1600x1200 and the ratio is BAD!

I got 2 screens 1st is 2560x1440 (where i play the game) and 2nd is 1920x1080.

I re-downloaded the client from your links and also tried to change it from config in WTF but nothing worked.

Any ideas?

For games that freeze or black screen or can't see game window ( anything related to Direct X ) you can try this to fix it !

I had a issue where my game would just freeze and or crash sometimes even leading to a blue screen.

I simply went into World of Warcraft\WTF\config.wtf  and modified the SET gxResolution to 1920x1080 so it would look like this

SET gxResolution "1920x1080" I also added this code line     SET gxApi "d3d11"        to make sure the game used direct x 11

Make sure to add the right resolution for your specific monitor ! Mine was 1920x1080 , but your could be different !

My laptop is a xps 15 l502x in case you wanted to compare maybe.

You can always try to run it with Direct x 9 as well,

File location bellow
World of Warcraft\WTF\config.wtf

code line to add in config.wtf text file bellow

SET gxApi "d3d11"

SET gxApi "d3d9"

Keep in mind that you only pick on of the code lines (d3d11 = Direct X 11)   &   (d3d9 = Direct X 9).

AFAIK ( plz correct me if I'm wrong ) 1.12 doesn't have Dx11 support.

GxAPI variable only accepts DirectX9 and OpenGL in the 1.12 client ( OpenGL for mac )

Setting to anything else will probably just default to Dx9

Maybe I'm wrong , I'll test to see if it does use Dx11 next time I play.

You can try to set the game to run "borderless windowed"

SET gxWindow "1"
SET gxMaximize "1"

Or ingame , go to video settings , set "windowed" and "maximised" on.

That should use your desktop "default resolution" and just use windowed without borders ( fake fullscreen / Borderless fullscreen )

Edit: If case your using OsX check this thread in battle.net forums , though it would be weird since it states the bug was introduced in 5.3 (ignore if your on windows)

I've tried all of the setting, nothing seems to work. My issue is, how can this be a problem only for few guys since we all got the same client?

I got a win10 computer and not Mac or Linux etc, it doesn't make sense to me.

Anyone found a solution maybe?

What I would do is install the battlenet launcher. In there you should he able to reset the WoW configs to defaults.  If not,  you can install retail WoW and use it to set your configs.  (Don't need an active account any more - free to play till level 20)

What you set in retail should change what yo have for vanilla.  You will get a popup stating your hardware has change asking if you would like to reset.

Reset will go with vanilla settings.  Not resetting will go with retail settings.  If you have 4k or other modern feature. Keep retail configs.
