Random FPS drops (Freeze)

Recommended Posts

Lately, I've been having FPS problems. It's probably irrelevant, but it started happening around the time I changed my Config file. The reason I think this is irrelevant is because I changed it back already, and the FPS problems continued. I have tried really bad graphics and it's still happening, I doubt that my computer can't handle it. Yesterday, I completely reinstalled WoW, so a fresh Config and only took the Addons I needed from old folder. I just tested without any Addons as well, same problem, so it most likely has nothing to do with the Config or the Addons.

Now, about the FPS problems. It's a simple freeze for about quarter of a second. My FPS used to be 60 and once or twice a minute would go down to 58.3 for half a second, my friend had the same, and that was perfect, no freezing. Now however, even if it shows 60 FPS (sometimes 58.3 like earlier), I feel like there's some screen tearing or very slight FPS problems, but that's not the main problem. The main thing is that sometimes it suddenly drops to 46 or 43 FPS and that's the quarter of a second freeze.

Why do I think it's not just my bad PC? The answer to that is simple, I don't have any FPS problems in other games, that are obviously more demanding. One example would be League of Legends, I played one game yesterday, just to see if it's having problems as well and no, it was fluid FPS, no problems at all.

My Specs (ASUS N551VW)

  • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @2.60GHz    2.59 GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • System type: 64-bit, x64-based processor
  • GPU: GTX 960M

Kind Regards,

I have absolutely no issues.

Intel i5-6600k Skylake @4.2 GHz

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming Premium at Stock

Asus Maximus VIII Hero

Acer Predator X34 34 inch 3440X1440 monitor

Samsung 840 EVO 500GB SSD

Silverstone Strider Gold 850W PSU

...therefore it must be your laptop. Laptops are not ideal platforms for gaming. Get yourself a desktop PC with an overcklockable Intel CPU Sandy Bridge or older, and overclock it to increase your single thread performance.

What you can do with this CPU you have is make it run constantly at max turbo frequency when you play WoW. To do that, you may have to buy a laptop cooling pad and open your laptop to replace the TIM of your CPU with something like Gelid Extreme

Laptops are not ideal gaming platforms. A 6 year old desktop rig with an [email protected] GHz won't have any of these problems FYI.

My Desktop is just broken atm, will get it fixed in a month or so, but until then I would like to play without problems.

Also, I'm rather sure that it's not my computer. Other games are running just fine, I could run Skyrim SE on max graphics without problems.

I'm not having any problems either. You mentioned Skyrim, but that's not an Internet-based game (even if you have the Steam version, the intensity of Internet traffic doesn't compare to an MMO). How about other MMO's? If your desktop computer works fine with MMO's, but your laptop doesn't, it might be a connectivity issue withe laptop itself. If you haven't tried a wired connection between your laptop and modem/router, that would be a worthwhile test. Eliminating wifi from the mix may narrow down the problem.

Overclock your 2500k to 4.5 GHz and tell us if you still have issues.

I overclocked my Cpu some time ago and only had problems with it. So no I wont overclock my Cpu. And I should not need to overclock my Cpu for a game that is 10 years old WTF.

Edit: I might add that I get 144fps+ ingame. So my Pc is obviously strong enough to play the game :P

WoW:Vanilla is only using one thread, and it hammers down CPUs pretty hard. Unless your seriously overclock your CPU, then you will keep having issues.

A 2500k at stock does not have enough single thread performance to run WoW without issues, especially not during 40 man raids and in cities where there are hundreds of toons.

We don't care how many FPS you get when you are alone out in the world, whether it is 144 FPS or 1444 FPS. You need to realize that you sound like a moron when you say that you get 144 FPS out there in the world when you are alone, because WoW is not a fast-paced FPS game and therefore you do not benefit from 144 FPS or 200 FPS.

I just wanted to say that I get enough fps everytime. And yes I know that I wont need that much fps. I get like 60 Fps in Xr on Elysium where there are the most people I could find. (A few days ago atleast I play now on ZK so I dont know how Xr looks on Elysium). So I dont think its a performance problem. Or can you explain me why I can get good Fps and it still freezes sometimes randomly?
These freezes even occur when Im alone in the world. So its not realy demanding on my hardware I would think.

Well, interesting discussion you gents are having here, but the problem is pretty much solved for me, I got my desktop to work. Would be nice to fix on laptop as well though, just in case.
