Lost Authentication Code Generator

Recommended Posts

So I ran out of space on my phone and desperately needed to store stuff on it ASAP. I deleted a whole bunch of apps, including the Google Authenticator.

I thought the Google Authenticator went through the Google Account. So I thought I could just reinstall the app, log back in and have all of my "accounts" on there still.
Apparently not.

How can I go about adding the authenticator again? There is no way to remove the authenticator without having the authenticator. I was not given any backup codes or anything when I added the authenticator.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Yeah. It's definitely a problem. What if someone loses their phone? Does that mean if your phone breaks, or you lose it, or you do something stupid like me, your account is gone forever?

There should be a back-up code I can write down, so that in the event of me being stupid and uninstalling the app, I can use that code to essentially remove the authenticator.

Thanks for the link, but that is for the Google Authenticator when doing the actual Google Account sign in. It isn't for the app.

EDIT:

Is there a way I could have a code e-mailed to me or something? That way I could verify that I know the account name, the password, and also have access to the e-mail.

I was doing a bit of research on this issue since I recently enabled 2FA and while I think it's a great feature the risk of losing my codes is a major concern since I play around with custom roms etc. on my phone quite a bit.

First if you are on android and your phone is rooted you can supposedly make backups of the Google Authenticator database as described here The first answer there describes how to do it via ADB, but I assume you could do it via your phone file manager --> copy to computer or other backup solution.

Second there are authenticator apps that support some kind of built in backup, Authy for example. However this is not one of the suggested apps on the Elysium website so I cannot say for sure if that would be supported.

Finally I have read in passing that if you lose your authentication information(like what happened to you), but you still have the email you received from Elysium with the QR code you used to initialize 2FA it might be as simple as just adding a account in Google Authenticator using that same QR code then proceeding with the generated codes as usual. The logic being that the "code" embedded in the QR code is still in sync with the Elysium 2FA system, so all you need to do is re-initialize it on your phone.

Hopefully that helps. I would like to see a more clear backup solution written out by the Elysium folks in the future.

Download the app again ---->open the app and select create new account  ----->  open the mail you got when you registered the account first time----->Scan the QR code again.

Nice one guys. Didn't think of checking my e-mail!

Everyone should keep a backup of that code, or print out the QR code and keep it safe somewhere.

Did you back everything up before you did it?

Idk, I don't really use smartphones that much, but I just put my sim card in new phone, connected my google account, and it automaticly put back the data. i think it gets backed up automaticly per day or something, but again, I don't know smartphones so I wouldn't really know. Sorry!

How strange. I had my authenticator for about two weeks. Anyone know if there is some Google back up service or something?
