Stupid question? How do I get AddOns? Help please

Recommended Posts

I'm using the World of Warcraft - Classic 1.12.1 (Stormrage) download. There was no AddOns folder in the Interface folder, so I created one and threw a few addons in there. Didn't seem to do anything though. Just wondering what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks

Based on what you're saying it sounds like you have the folder structure correct but just to be sure you should have:

World of Warcraft (or whatever you named the folder where your WoW.exe lives)/Interface/Addons

and each addon should have a folder inside there IE Questie should have a folder "!Questie" in there.

Few other things to consider:

  • Addon folder must match the .toc name inside that folder.  IE Questie has the folder "!Questie" to match "!Questie.toc".
  • Ensure you have your addons enabled at the character screen.
  • Ensure the security on your WTF folder is allowed for your user profile.  You should have at least read and write access to that folder (and probably your interface/addons folder).  A common issue that is seen with this is you can load addons but none of your settings save - that typically means you have permission to read the addons folder, but not write to the WTF folder which is where your addon settings get stored.
  • Not sure what the stormrage client is compared to others but if you can play on Elysium with it you shouldn't have any issues...

Thanks for the reply man. So I attempted to do all the things you said and I still have no idea what I am looking at honestly. The WoW client I downloaded just seems to be..different from what it is supposed to be? I can play on Anathema fine and my shaman is level 20 so I have no idea.

This is what I'm looking at inside the folder where my wow.exe is located: http://imgur.com/a/3g0Q1

The first image is the folder everything is located in, 2nd image is what's inside the Data folder, 3rd image is what's inside the Interface folder, 4th image is what's inside the addons folder. I did click 'properties' on each addon folder (sw_stats and damagemeters) to uncheck 'read only'. Required admin to do this and I did it. The WTF folder doesn't exist anywhere in these folders. It seems to me there are actually a lot of folders missing from this particular vanilla client that should be there. WTF, Cache, etc, none of them are there. I'm not really sure how it works, but it does, so I didn't ask questions and just said 'fuck it, it works, I'll use it'.

As you can see though this is now causing me serious issues when attempting to use addons. Should I just try a new client download or something? Totally lost on what to do here.

EDIT - So I just went back into my addons folder to check their properties to see if they were no longer 'read only' after unchecking the box and apparently it didn't take. I gave it admin permissions when I did it but all the folders within the World of Warcraft - Classic 1.12.1 (Stormrage) folders are still checked as 'read only'. I'm apparently unable to make any changes at all to these folders even with admin permissions? I am so lost right now.

Interface folder goes straight into the one where WoW.exe is in, not inside the Data folder. Also, you should move WoW out of Program Files.

Ok, I figured it out, I just had to move the Interface folder from the Data folder to the World of Warcraft - Classic 1.12.1 (Stormrage) folder. Whoever set up this client download had the folders all wrong I guess.

Thank you very much for the help!

Why should I move out it out? Just curious what difference it could make

Starting with Vista or 7 (can't remember exactly), applications need admin privileges to write files to any location inside Program Files. WoW writes to its own folder a lot, mostly for configuration. So you should move it somewhere else. C:\, your User folder.. something like that.

Ah yeah, this ASUS is on 8.1 so that does make sense actually. Ty for the tip!
