Game Freezes When Shapeshifting

Recommended Posts

So I play as a druid. When I shapeshift into either bear or cat form, I get like a 0.5 second screen freeze. It's as if the game is trying to access assets from the HDD. That wouldn't be a problem, except that it happens every single time. It makes playing a druid painful.

This doesn't happen constantly, however. If I relog, it won't happen for a while. But then it'll start happening again after about an hour.

I'm pretty sure that it's because the game needs to access assets from the HDD, but if that is the case, why aren't these assets stored into RAM?

The freezing doesn't happen with travel form, however. So perhaps the freezing is due to the swapped action bar icons?

Any help would be great. Thanks!

- Try shapeshifting with all addons off, see if it still happens
- Try removing the WTF + WDB folder and retry
- Try lowering ingame graphical settings
- Try reinstalling/updating your graphics drivers
- Try reinstalling the game
- Try reinstalling the game on another hdd (or ssd <- my recommendation).

Also what are your specs?

I'll do that.

I've got a 3570k overclocked to (I think) 4Ghz

16 GB of ram at stock clock

Gigabyte 1060 6gb

And a 2TB HDD (which the game is currently on).

I may try putting the game on a RAMdisk, to see if that makes any difference.

In that case I don't blame your hardware, so lowering settings won't do much I guess.

Then I suspect a buggy addon or buggy install of wow.

Goodluck! Let me know if you fixed it!

I dunno if it could be an addon. Addons just change the interface and controls, right? It's just LUA scripting, isn't it? That shouldn't change the way the game loads assets and stuff, which appears to be the issue. Only thing I can think of is maybe a certain addon is being called when I shapeshift? But that would surely happen every time, then.

It's tricky to properly test. If I delete my WTF and interface folders and then play the game, it can take up to several hours before the issue happens, and even then It doesn't always happen. Looks like I'm gonna have to play without addons until either the issue happens again, or after many many hours.

I did some Googling, and I found this. Doesn't really help me though, as he doesnt say what addon it is:

You simply find out by playing with 0 addons on. Then add them in 1 by 1.

But yes, addons can give such issues even though its 'just lua scripting'. (Not saying it 100% is in this case, but its worth finding out).
