Game is missing "life" that was in original

I played WOW on release.  I have just started a char, and it does bring back memories.  However,

 

I am in Dun Morogh, the second zone for Dwarves.  I remember the world having more life.  There was a mortar brigade on the road from the starter area, and they used to play out a scene.  Shooting the mortars, someone going out to check, accidentally shooting him etc.  Now they just stand around. When you did the quest for the two gnomes, getting their parts, they then when to work and played out a scene.  Now they just stand there.

 

I don't know if this was in the original game, after it was patched or is a "problem" with the private server, but I miss that extra life that was in the world.

The whole 'war' there was added much later on. If i remember when i played Vanilla those silly little gnomes stood there.

It's an old game, it's all about that grind!

Yeah that interaction happened later on so either you're lying about playing when it released or you're misremembering starting at a later time.  I think it was the same patch that introduced BGs.
