You can tank any dungeon just fine as any spec. You only need to be prot if you are a set tank in a raid (not counting UBRS as that is pretty much a 10 man dungeon) and even then you can get away with not being prot before BwL if you aren't the MT.

With shield block up, you will be immune to crits and crushing blows as they are both pushed off. If you don't have it up, you will have a 15% chance to take a crushing blow and a 5.6% - (+def)*0.04% chance to be crit. Some mechanics like nefarian's warrior class call make it impossible to keep up shield block and you will need 440 def. The rule of thumb I go by for fights that don't disable shield block is to have at least around 420 def and that will generally keep you safe from crits and crushing blows.

The world buffs aren't exactly much help for progression as it takes a while to get those buffs. It takes 10-15 minutes for a group to get the tribute buffs if they have warlocks with tons of shards standing at the instance, at least 8 priests to mind soothe, and at least 8 people that can tank tribute. It takes around half an hour to get the tribute buffs if you aren't so fortunate to have the three things listed. Also there is pretty much no way that you will be able to reliably have the Ony and Hakkar buffs as those are a one time turn in. The only raid that the tribute buffs would be worth considering for progression is Naxx.

I'd go resto when you start grinding your BiS. Yea, you can probably get the job done as enhancement farming the BiS, but you will be much better off as resto.

I'm able to play roughly 25 hours a week and I'm wondering if that is enough time to be able to get the consumables and everything to be the 1st OT or MT of a relatively casual raiding guild. I really enjoy being a prot warrior in endgame and know the spec well, but I would like to know ahead of time if I can even do it.

Are any of the mobs orange level (3+ levels above) to the tank? If that is the case, there is a mechanic called crushing blows that causes the tank to take extra damage.

Wow that's all you get for damage taken? That's like 15-20 rage from MC boss's melee attacks in preBiS gear.

As a guy who plays a tank, those bad tanks can be replaced easily in raids. Unless the bad tanks are buddies with the GM or RL, they won't be tanking for long.

You can't move ranks sadly. You have to manually change the permissions and names of the ranks below the placement of the new one and demote everyone that is below the new rank. Let them know that it's not a real demotion but you are just adjusting for a new rank.

It doesn't seem to affect it too much from what I've seen. I've seen many orc MTs in 8/8 BwL guilds on nost PvP and getting the MT spot is extremely competitive. If you are rolling a new character, I would roll Tauren, but you can still tank just fine on an Orc if you already made an Orc.

Seriously, you guys are still at this discussion? I am a tank myself and I know it feels horrible to lose those shoulders as they are BiS until Chromag in BwL and BwL isn't even out on Elysium. However, Beer did not ninja since it's clear from the screenshots with everyone but one guy rolling need that you did not set the rules of the group being need before greed on BoE epics. Always make sure to let people know that BoE epics are need before greed, screenshot that you stated that in the group, and if someone still rolls need, screenshot them doing it and then you will have a real reason to call them a ninja-looter. This thread needs to die in a fire seriously.

Leveling as arms with 5/5 deflection and at least 2/5 (I personally use 4/5) tactical mastery will supply you with all you need to tank at low levels while still allowing you to do reasonable damage like with a pure dps build. Also it's not like the other choices on the tiers with those 2 talents are super good anyways, so you aren't losing much of any dps when questing with a 2H. Don't start going down the fury or prot tree until you get Mortal Strike. You can tank the 5 mans just fine as a paladin. Heck, you are arguably better than warriors due to having real AoE threat and not crappy shouts that barely keep them off the healer. As for off-tanking in raids, there are actually some situations (though not many) where a pally OT is better than a warrior OT like the draknids on Nefarian since there are so many. However, you will almost certainly have to be able to effectively heal and off-tanking will be a utility of yours instead of a role. What I mean by this is the chances of you getting a spot as a set tank like a prot warrior is extremely low.

I actually tried charging like 10 or 20g per run of DM W on nost with preraid BiS gear (the damn server shut down after my guild's first week in MC) and people just bitched and I didn't get any offers. Do I need to have some raid gear to be able to charge like that?

Actually thunderclap didn't do that much aside from 5 mans as past that stage it was pretty much useless in TBC compared to what the other tanks had (even druids 3 target swipe was better).

Ironically this morning The Barrens Chat was talking about how DM is Dire Maul and not Deadmines.
