There was some other situations recently where people got a mini ban for spamming or using some types of keywords in chat.

If it's problems with whispers, there is the ".wr on" command to stop anyone but friends and guildies whispering you, if so you can turn .wr off. If it's problems with several chat channels being inaccessible no matter what you try, other people have been afflicted with this situation and I've not seen a solution as of yet.

I can't think of anyway your client would affect ingame mail unless it's some type of modified client, like windows wrapped up in wineskin for mac, something unusual like that. I can't even imagine addons could hide mail. Did you try turning all your addons off. To me this sounds like a bug, that needs to me reported.
