Blizzard did intend for them to be used as summoning stones, eventually..... in tbc. Maybe you'd prefer to play on a tbc server?

When I reached level 30+ it generally took me 2-3 or so hours per level. When I was close to 40 it took around 4-5 hours. Alot of zones are crowded atm so I found that running dungeons over and over was a bit more faster then questing
