That is the case. Nighthaven is our only realm and since it is a fresh realm, no character transfers are allowed at this point. We would like to have you on Nighthaven though. :)

Hi Selvantes, as you may already know, servers can experience certain difficulties from time to time, that is completely normal, nothing out of the ordinary. However, if an unexpected situation which affects our servers badly in fact does happen, our team starts working on the problem immediately in order to get servers back online as soon as possible so you guys can get back to the game and continue enjoying gaming on our servers. :)

Hello Glorymaker, "Stratholme is an end-game server at patch 1.12 (Naxxaramas) and it will proceed to The Burning Crusade. Don't worry though, your characters will not be lost as you will be invited to copy your character over onto our TBC realm and your Vanilla characters will stay exactly where they are!" Long story short, no one is forcing you to play TBC, you can stay and play Vanilla for as long as you like even though TBC will be out there as an option. :)

As far as Nighthaven server is concerned, there will be no TBC before January 2019 at best, the reason being December 2018 is reserved for the last vanilla patch 1.12. Stratholme, on the other hand, is already at the latest patch so your guess is as good as mine.

If you look at the official patch release timeline, december 2018 is reserved for the last patch (1.12), so there will be no TBC before early 2019 at best. They will most likely release a new TBC realm/server and you will be able to copy your vanilla character and hop straight into TBC if you wish to experience TBC content, but again, it almost certainly won't be before early 2019 (on Nighthaven).

Nighthaven server has some stability related issues, and therefore is down for the moment being. Stratholme is working fine at the moment and you can play. Nighthaven will be online as soon as Elysium team fixes a problem.

You can stay on Nighthaven and enjoy this server without worrying. People get confused with how things are going to work very often. So first things first, TBC is not going to be released anytime soon, it'll take approximately a year, which is a decent amount of time indeed. Once TBC gets released, you will be able to COPY your existing lvl60 vanilla char from Nighthaven to a TBC realm, so basically you will be able to play TBC from 60-70 (you do not necessarily have to start from a scratch). However, no one is forcing you to play TBC if you do not want to. If you, on the other hand, decide to give TBC a shot and copy your char from Nighthaven to a TBC realm, your vanilla char on Nighthaven will not be deleted, it will be kept as a lvl60 on vanilla server. This situation is pretty much a win-win one, those who want some TBC experience will give it a shot, and those who do not are not forced to do so in any way, they can keep rocking on vanilla content. As much as I personally love vanilla, in year's time I'll probably want some TBC content (love TBC dungeons, quests, Outland, gear design <3). So there you have it, I hope I made everything clear to you. :)

The thinking behind TBC progression is to upgrade the servers to TBC once Blizzard releases their vanilla servers because pop will decrease, which tbh makes perfect sense. Now, we will not enter TBC phase anytime soon, to be precise, it will take like 12-13 months according to them, so play what you want. We will be able to copy our characters to TBC servers and continue playing from lvl 60 (you do not have to lvl all over again), however, that does not mean your vanilla lvl 60 char will be deleted on vanilla server, you'll basically have two exactly the same chars.

Just spare 10 minutes of your time and lvl a bank alt to lvl5. I know this is not a solution to your problem, but is what it is, it's really not a big deal, just do a few quests while heading towards capital city.
