Hi, just downloaded the game, changed the realm thing to set realmlist 37.59.12.33 I then loaded up the game, got to the main menu, typed in the account name and password that I registered with on your website, but it immediately says 'disconnected from server'

Any idea why this is?

Check your realmlist once again. Sometimes this file has flag "Read-only" and can not be edited. So you should just download our file http://valkyrie-wow.org/files/realmlist.wtf and replace your one.
