how to edit file to even begin playing

i need to 

1. Edit the content of the file 'realmlist.wtf' to:
   'set realmlist logon.elysium-project.org'

but how do i do that? im not familiar with this stuff, only played wow for a few hours to test it out in prep for this release

First you need to know where the client is installed.  For example, let's say you installed the client into C:\Games\World of Warcraft 1.12\  then the steps on Windows 7/8/10 would be

 

1) Click the Start globe

2) In the search box type or copy&paste this:  Notepad C:\Games\World of Warcraft 1.12\realmlist.wtf

3) Delete the text and type or copy& paste this:  set realmlist logon.elysium-project.org

4) This should be the only line shown

5) Click File, then Save

6) Click File, then Exit

 

You may wish to repeat steps 2 & 6 just to verify the file was edited and saved properly.

am i supposed to be able to open the wtf. file?

Yes, however depending on your UAC (user account controls) for your computer, you may need to click and drag the file onto your desktop first.   Once you've updated the realmlist name, save and then click and drag it back to the location you pulled it from.
