PvE DPS Class Selection: Warlock vs Mage

Hey folks ,

As the title states i could use some assistance in selecting a ranged dps for vanilla. I do enjoy both class archetypes but i could use some more experienced opinions on the matter.

I am hesitant to roll a mage since they are really popular and i am afraid that i won't be able to get into a good guild that easy ( when compared to a lock). Leveling isn't also as easy but still decent.

Locks on the other hand have the easier leveling, the free mount and chepa epic mount and their utility. What makes me hesitant to play a lock is the mendatory pre raid shard farming.

When it comes to pure DPS performance, how close are the two classes?

Warlock is dumpster DPS until ZG gets released, then they are even with mages through AQ40. In Naxx warlocks pull ahead.

Well at the start warlocks really struggle since the itemization is really bad.  Mages have the same issue but are able to perform better since they have access to +hit from talents.  So it might be easier to find a good guild as a mage at the start.  However, finding a good guild is more dependent on you as a player than if you choose mage or warlock.  If you can show people you are a good/reliable player you will find a good guild regardless of the choice you make between mage and warlock.  So with that my advice is to go with the class you prefer.  

I'd say from ZG onward both classes are very similar in terms of DPS output.

I see, why is the ZG releas so crucial? Is it due to the introduction of the bloodvine set?

Yeah bloodvine gives the much needed +hit for locks since they lack it from talents
