Is it possible to play where Blizz servers are blocked?

Recommended Posts

So I have a quick question for someone who's a little more knowledgeable when it comes to IT than myself. I work at a college and during the slow periods or on lunch they don't really restrict what we do (with in reason) That being said I do know they have some of the more popular games or sites blocked (such as retail versions of WoW, Clash of clans, and a few other well known games)

My question is this, since this connects to a private server is there something in this client that still points back to Blizzard that would be caught by what ever they use to block the retail versions, or is this more so a Port blocking issue and even though its pointing to a private server the same ports are still being used and thus blocked? Currently the only way i can play is if i tether my phone's data. (which isnt an issue if its my only option)

Thanks,

Yea as I was typing the question up I thought back to my first Cisco class and assumed they were just blocking certain well known ports of these popular games. Just hoping for some form of confirmation.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm like the fact that every time I play on vanilla server, I let blizzard know that I play not retail version.

And they can't ban you for playing on private servers.

Yes, the WoW client uses the same port(s) but it just connects to a different server. Usually, they just block based on port - there are dozens of servers, even on retail and the IPs people might want to connect to change all the time.

You might be able to circumvent this with a VPN such as Smoothping, Pingzapper etc.
