Live a bit off the grid... help with authentication please

Recommended Posts

Yeah I am a strange creature without cell phone reception where I live.  I am trying to figure out how to use authentication to protect my account.  Do I use something like google authenticator with GAuth?  I only ever play on this one desktop, so maybe there is a simpler solution.  Any help is appreciated :)

Well, yes, I have plenty of bone/stone axes n spears :D  But unless I can find the thief I won't be able to hack at them!

Everything is hardwired.  I used to use a router, but there really is no need for it since my modem is right on my desk.  So, I DO have internet lol.  Fast even!  But I do think there is more to it then that, ie: I can't 'scan' a code, I would have to enter something like a number.  I dunno .. it seems like rocket science and yet I am sure it isn't,

I believe you just need to be able to connect to the internet, either via WiFi or mobiel network.

This is correct. Install the gauth on your cell (if you have one) and then have it connect to home wifi. Will work that.

If that is not an option, then I am sure I have seen elsewhere on here a solution that involves a desktop app.

Ok maybe I didn't make it clear in the original post:  I have no cell phone.  All has to be done on my desktop.  Maybe this isn't possible, but I think it's more unusual then not possible and hope someone knows what I can do.

Look, whilst the authentication is great and it works well, you don't need it.  All you need is a safe secure password that you know is used for nothing else.  Change your password regularly.  Use numbers, letters, anything you can to make it as unique as possible. Write it down if you have to. Don't click on any phishing links in any e-mails you might get.  Check your PC for malware REGULARLY. Don't share your account details with anyone.

These basic things are enough to secure your account forever.  Authentication is just an extra layer of protection over and above the basic things that everyone should be doing anyway.
