Russian Music Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Disclaimer #1: I understand basic-level Russian, and I'm not shy of using Google Translate. Feel free to reply in Russian.Disclaimer #2: I'm interested in classics (well, "oldies"/"old school") - stuff that successfully passed the test of time. Therefore refrain from suggesting newer titles (past decade or so, 2005 as a rough threshold), unless you think of them as being exceptional (read: classics in the making). As a non-Russian, my contact with Russian music has always been scarce. I'm looking to broaden the horizon a bit, so I'm open to suggestions. As far as music goes, I'm not picky; feel free to put to the table anything and everything, regardless of the genre. I've been known to have eclectic tastes, don't shy away from suggesting not-exactly-mainstream artists/genres (examples: rap, metal, electronic music/EDM).For reference, here's a compilation of the Russian artists I've been exposed to (read: listening to more than a random song, here and there). Yes, it's actually that short. :P

1. Весёлые ребята, Аллa Пугачёвa (70s, early 80s).

2. ППК (late 90s).

3. Тату, Земфира (early 00s).

I'd be most interested in filling in the gaps. In particular: rap ("golden age" rap, late 80s/early 90s), metal (I tend to like black/doom/gothic/symphonic; I'm mostly indifferent to death/grindcore/heavy), electronic music, folk.

Guidelines:

1. Please refrain from suggesting "bastardized" titles (mostly relevant: pop/folk; mostly irrelevant: rap/metal) - Russian artists performing in English. Titles originating from the former СССР space, performed in Russian derivatives (Belarusian/Ukrainian), are fair game.

2. Please specify the corresponding album, where applicable (artist-title-album). It makes searching for other titles of the same artist significantly easier, especially for someone who doesn't fully grasp Russian.

3. Linking to Youtube (or your favorite video content provider) a certain title is welcome, but definitely not necessary.

4. Much the same, linking to the lyrics of a certain title is definitely not necessary.

Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks.

Something from USSR? That has to be the understatement of the day. I think most of the tracks from that playlist are wicked, ridiculously catchy. That's exactly what I was looking for, well-aged music covered by the dust of time. :P

PS. Баланс made me giggle like a little girl. [insert gnome female /lol here]

Паша's Moon Rover is great to relax with (e.g. just before sleep, you know). Sure, a song from 2012 isn't exactly old, but it's a good one nevertheless. Thumbs up. Keep them coming, ladies and gentlemen.

I'm afraid we need to change the strategy. I'll need to invest huge amounts of time (months, realistically) just to familiarize myself with the stuff you've suggested in a single day. So yes, it's clearly unsustainable. Please switch to suggesting single songs, or short playlists (10 songs or so), corresponding to what you deem representative of a given artist.

I did parse, not thoroughly of course, all you've suggested so far. I do remember some of the artists you've suggested, although I have only listened to a few songs here and there in the past. For instance, София Ротару's Было, но прошло.

As for DJ Грув, it seems that I've met some of his work before. Upon listening again to Счастье есть, I definitely remembered it. The artist's name, even the song's name, were lost in the mist of the time - but the "flow" of the track, that was still engraved into my brain.

Keep them coming, ladies and gentlemen. But in a more digestible form, please. I'm only human. :P

Hello. For earlier apologize for my Google translator)

Всё хорошо, друг. As long as we can understand each other, all is fine. I don't care about a poor vocabulary and/or grammatical errors, and neither should you. Google Translate is quite alright, although it usually "coughs up" at abbreviations and/or internet slang.

Added links to songs performers in my first post.

Thanks for the effort. Trying to understand what a certain artist is all about is made so much easier when you have a starting point.

From what I've listened to, I find Миша Маваши to be... strange. And when I say "strange", I actually want to say "different". Much different to Western-style rap (let's be honest here, Western rap pretty much identifies itself with American rap).

1. Clean vocals. Unlike so many American rappers, no thick accent, no intentional mispronunciation of words.

2. Minimalistic instrumental line. American rap usually has much more elaborate, more pretentious instrumental lines.

3. Almost no bling, the very thing American rap is based on ("Look at me, fool, I've got money! And women! And cars! And guns! Muscles too!").

An interesting side effect of those clean vocals: I've managed to recognize/understand about one in three words (no cheating, I didn't have the lyrics in front of my eyes), despite being sung very fast, like in typical rap. Not bad at all, considering that my grasp of Russian is anything but stellar.

[...]

Sure thing, I'm definitely interested in more suggestions. Frankly, that's the nature of the beast. Listening to music, you'll discover a few things you really dislike, a few things you really like, and a myriad of things you're more or less indifferent to. In order to get to those few precious gems (that you like), you have to "dig" constantly. If you're being complacent with what you're listening to, you'll be missing a lot of the said gems. Therefore keep searching, searching, searching.

On the other hand, I don't think that private messages are the best path to follow, for a couple of reasons:

1. This thread may be useful for other non-Russians that want to expand their music horizon.

2. It may even be useful to Russians, as this thread is a mix of music genres and of time frames. I doubt that there's anyone who is (very) familiar with absolutely everything that's been suggested so far. I seriously doubt it.

PS. Blame me and my eclectic music tastes, I find both Moonboy and Judgement equally catchy. Albeit in (very) different ways. :P

The perception of music is inherently subjective. The degrees of comparison (better/best, worse/worst), however, are supposed to be objective/factual. That's why I tend to refrain from using them when discussing about music. That much said, I agree with your assessment. Mujuice does have a certain something, the "je ne sais quoi", it stands out in the crowd.

As for reggae music (and reggae-based fusion/hybrids), I'm not really a fan. That is, most of the time. I kinda like Аддис Абеба's style, though. From what I've listened so far, my favorite would be Умываю руки.

I.

II. Like many other things, music is normally distributed (wiki: EN / RU). If we are to be cynical, 95% of all artists are just pale imitations of the trendsetters, the select few which qualify for the history books. That doesn't make them useless, though, as even average music can be enjoyed.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will check them out when I'll find a window of free time.

>From what I've listened to, I find Миша Маваши to be... strange.

Dont pay attension, it is crap. Russians find it funny to exalt absolute shit and see how newfags eat this stinking brown mass with pleasure.

Again, based on what I've listened to, they're far from being insufferable, in my opinion. To give an example, I think that Samwell's What What is exactly the kind of thing that leaves you asking yourself "What the hell did I just listen/watch to?". What a fine example of non-music.

Well, add a clip from one amusing group. If you find a tex and its maximum translate correctly, you'll get a good mood. That there was no mysteries about who is Burato, I will say that it is a local Pinocchio, only our nose grew when he lied.

Бони Нем -

Yeah, the song's funny. Every now and then, metalheads stop trying to be serious, and Бурато is but one example among many others. See Twisted Sister's Burn In Hell, Metallica's Enter Sandman, Sepultura's Ratamahatta, Cradle of Filth's Satanic Mantra, and so on.
