Mage Guide plus pre-raid gear list

This is a specified pre-raid gear list for patch 1.12 that you should obtain before you start raiding as a frost mage.

A lot of this list will last beyond Tier 1 raids. Additionally, I added some information about Enchants and Stats.

Talents

 

 

The General Mage spec which most mages should have while raiding is the 31/0/20 Arcane/Frost which will maximize your damage.
*at least one mage per raid should have the Winter's Chill spec which should be something like 20/0/31 ~ 16/0/35. Ask your class leader.

 

Head

note: You should definitely work on getting these since they are on par with Bracers of Arcane Accuracy which is a BWL drop.

Enchants
 
Enchanting your BiS gear and future upgrades is an important part of any raiding environment and enchanting your gear is expected from you. There aren't that many extremely good enchants for mages but that gives us more reason not to slack on enchants. Here are some good enchants for mages: 
 
head: ZG enchant (get this! You will only get this for Spellweaver's Turban, T2 or Mish'Undare)
 
shoulders: ZG exalted enchant (get this!)
 
cloak: +15 fire resistance
 
chest: +4 stats (or +100 mana)
 
wrists: +7 int (or +7 stamina)
 
hands: +15 Frost Spell Damage for Ony/MC/BWL (+15 Fire Spell Damage for AQ40)
 
legs: ZG enchant (get this! You will only get this for Bloodvine Leggings or T2)
 
boots: minor speed increase
 
1h/2h weapon: +30 spellpower (get this!)
 
 
Stats
 
As a mage you should focus on the following.
 
16% hit. We already get 6% hit from talents so you should focus on getting that last 10% from gear. Compared to warlocks who get nothing from talents we have no excuses for lacking in hit. Being hit capped might not be necessary but being hit capped = landing more spells = more damage done. Important.
 
Spellpower. More spellpower means your spells will do more damage. Important.
 
Intellect. More intellect means more mana and more crit. Makes your mana pool bigger so you can throw more ice and fire. A good stat overall. Important.
 
Crit. Frost mages don't benefit as much from crit as fire mages so a good guideline is 20sp is worth roughly 1% crit. Even if it's not massively important don't ignore it especially in end-game. When raiding AQ40 all mages will spec fire and crit becomes important to keep ignite up.
 
Stamina. Increases health, makes you stay alive longer. You shouldn't take much damage if you're careful but sometimes accidents happen. Like the mobs in MC that drop aggro every now and then or getting hit by AOE. 
 
Spirit. Not very good for mages but Mage Armor, Arcane Meditation and Evocation benefit from it. In raids when you are fully buffed and fully equipped with consumables your Evocation easily restores 80% of your mana so you don't need to focus on spirit.
 
Consumables
 
Brilliant Wizard Oil 
Use: While applied to target weapon it increases spell damage by up to 36 and increases Spell Critical chance by 1% . Lasts for 30 minutes.
Crafting: 2x Large Brilliant Shard, 3x Firebloom
note: When buying this from AH make sure it has 5 charges! Some people like to put them up with only 1 charge left.
 
Greater Arcane Elixir
Use: Increases spell damage by up to 35 for 1 hr.
Crafting: 3x Dreamfoil, 1x Mountain Silversage
 
Elixir of Greater Firepower (Required for AQ40)
Use: Increases spell fire damage by up to 40 for 30 min.
Crafting: 3x Fire Oil, 3x Firebloom
 
Elixir of Frost Power
Use: Increases spell frost damage by up to 15 for 30 min.
Crafting: 2x Wintersbite, 1x Khadgar's Whisker
 
Elixir of Greater Intellect 
Use: Increases Intellect by 25 for 1 hr.
Crafting: 1x Blindweed, 1x Khadgar's Whisker
 
Elixir of the Sages
Use: Increases Intellect and Spirit by 18 for 1 hr.
Crafting: 1x Dreamfoil, 2x Plaguebloom
 
Juju Guile
Use: Increases the target's Intellect by 30 for 30 min. (cooldown 1 min)
Reward from Wildkin E'ko
 
Scroll of Intellect IV
Use: Increases the target's Intellect by 16 for 30 min.
World Drop
 
Cerebral Cortex Compound
Use: Increases Intellect by 25 when consumed. Effect lasts for 60 minutes. (cooldown 1 hr)
Reward from Infallible Mind
 
Flask of Supreme Power (very good for progress raids)
Use: Increases damage done by magical spells and effects by up to 150 for 2 hr. You can only have the effect of one flask at a time. This effect persists through death.

 

Major Mana Potion 
Use: Restores 1350 to 2251 mana. (cooldown 2 min)
Crafting: 3x Dreamfoil, 2x Icecap
 
Mageblood Potion
Use: Regenerate 12 mana per 5 sec for 1 hr. (cooldown 10 sec)
Crafting: 1x Dreamfoil, 2x Plaguebloom
 
Nightfin Soup
Use: Restores 874.8 health over 27 sec. Must remain seated while eating. Also restores 9 Mana every 5 seconds for 10 min.
Crafting: 1x Raw Nightfin Snapper, 1x Refreshing Spring Water

hey guys this list was made before nostalrius merge announcement, ill make some changes eventually been busy - this isn't accurate in some places

Yea some of these items are not in game yet. like the belt from arena. can't find a accurate BiS list anywhere T.T
