Fixing issues basing on wrong resources

Recommended Posts

Please check resources before you will change something. Another change was made here:

https://report.valkyrie-wow.org/issue/317

Basing on this resource:

http://web.archive.org/web/20060427224359/http://www.thottbot.com/?i=12514

Where in comments you can read:

The % is so low of a drop because people farm welps.    Not everyone that is killing them is on that quest.  Therefore, that % is entirely wrong.

What happened?

Whelps:

KIlls : 84976 , Drops Count: 618, Drops% : 0.7%

Elite Dragons:

Kills : 9712 , Drops Count : 108 , Drops% : 1.1%

Probably you Dodge that , reading comments here is not viable at all.

by Kanwedar <Exitiales>, 1.3 years ago  (2005)

I killed them for about 4 hours and then I finally got one.  Slaughtered a couple hundred normal ones and a few dozen of the elites too.  It dropped off a normal one, GL getting it within a couple hours.

I think I've killed about 150 of the small ones, and still haven't gotten it.  I'm considering making a third excursion out there, to try again, but beginning to wonder if this item is really worth it.

by Mirkon <Brotherhood of Bracelet>, 1.2 years ago (2005) The quest says it drops from the whelps, but I'm convinced it lies.  Me and my roommates killed hundreds of the whelps and saw nothing.

by Hadreye, 1.1 years ago (2005)

the drop rate is wrong, I'm still trying to get this item and I've killed about 150 of the whelps, if not more, I've killed about 30 of the elite dragons and nothing, now the elite dragons admittedly I haven't killed that many of but all are sayin 1 or 2 kills and it drops?  Not the case for me

by bustasnipe, 1.0 year ago (2005)

Took me 32 kills of small dragon whelps to get the heart.. It dropped off of a lvl 42 and according to thottbot the lvl 42's have a higher drop rate. So thottbot Is accurate its obviously not gonna be as easy for everyone or as hard because ITS RANDOM!

by badmephisto, 11.3 months ago (2005)
I killed like 30 - 50 of those whelps, grinded like 10k in process, and dropped 0. The quest was right too, im sure. I decided to abandon this quest, TERRIBLE

by Twotokes, 1.8 months ago (2006)
Hard drop. spent hours the first time looking for it then quit, about the fourth time (a week later) got it off small non elite whelp 2nd kill ez... best advice if u dont get it right away come back later.

And here is 1 big Comment mark as Yellow

by Asticles, 4.3 months ago (2006)
I'm a 45 Druid and spent the better part of the afternoon and half a level killing Scalding Whelps before the heart dropped.  I even killed a few 43 elite dragonkin.  Probably killed 200 of these stupid things before it finally dropped at 80,33 off a lvl 43 whelp.  The xp is great because you kill so many things, but it seems to me you could get more xp by completing 3 or 4 separate quests in the time you spend completing this one. Unless you get lucky or you just want the reward, don't waste the time.  I started to abandon this one, but at some point it became a matter of principle.  Hope this helps some folks out there.  Good Luck and Have Fun!!  That's what it is all about anyway, right?

And here is the guy with the Quest writing :

If the comments are not viable to you, why did you just spam them in your post, but only those comfortable to you? :D This is the quest item, mobs are killed by 2 factions for various other quests and also by farmers for the whelpling. You forgot about it and numbers won't tell you the truth because it counts all kills even without the actual quest. Real droprate is higher then shown in database because of that.

I believe he meant that one should look at all the comments, not just one. What you are saying is logically true based on how we know the datamining worked but this quest was also notorious for the drop rate for the quest item being very difficult to get. It certainly was not 100% drop rate. Personally I never finished it during retail vanilla despite killing dozens and dozens of whelps.

I've never said it was 100%, do you see it somewhere? We should have balanced droprates on server, not too low and not too high. Right now it was made too low after previous too high droprate. It's bit chaotic to have to change things twice. I believe that number of issues in the bugtracker didnt give time for developer to deeply analyze what he was doing.

This is what Wowhead shows : http://www.wowhead.com/item=4612/black-drakes-heart

Whelps : 0.1%

Elite Dragons : 0.5%

And here are their Comments *majority" :

By Skwidspawn (6,061 2·13·42) on 2009/03/01 (Patch 3.0.9)

Everyone knows that the Black Dragonflight is heartless. Expect to spend some time grinding them to find the one reject that has one.

By Boatski (410 1·4) on 2007/07/30 (Patch 2.1.3)

The drop rate on this item is VERY low. Been killing the whelps for about an hour or so.

violetta on 2007/08/06 (Patch 2.1.3)

levelled all the way from 41 to 42 on these dragons and no drop

kmoney on 2009/10/05 (Patch 3.2.2)

All I have to say about the drop rate is WTF? I've been grinding these for about a quarter-level at 42 and had Dark Whelpling and Gloves of Holy Might drop. Still grinding out for the heart.

44000+ xp (non-rested xp); roughly 200 kills, to finally get this stupid heart!! finally lol. one of the lowest drop rates for a quest item I've ever had, i even got a Dark Whelpling pet before this dropped...

By Tripix (1,012 6·18) on 2008/04/25 (Patch 2.4.1)

Had to kill about 120-130 (41-43 Scalding Whelp) to get an item. Awful drop.

Patch 2.4.1

By LordTyrano1988 (235 2) on 2010/01/11 (Patch 3.3.0)

After 97 kills i came here to see if im doing something wrong. After that short break, aware now of the awful drop rate, got it first kill. Yay!

Not worth it unless you're a hardcore completionist.

By penfold29 (1,215 4·5) on 2008/12/12 (Patch 3.0.3)

Agree with the above - Takes AGES to get this to drop, one of the lowest drop rates I've come across so far. Good luck doing this it's a pain

By warianton (658 7·5) on 2009/05/17 (Patch 3.1.1)

I hate to beat a dead horse, but this quest sucks! FINALLY got it to drop off a scorched gaurdian(elite) at 83, 58. Don't get discouraged, though. Be patient and it'll drop.

By Gwalchgwyn (4,152 1·11·28) on 2009/06/24 (Patch 3.1.3)

Killed every single whelp and drake in the area for about 2 hours before it dropped at level 80 :/ Now to go farm Jazz'rik for Bloodsail rep.

By xohhsnapitstasha (116 0) on 2008/06/21 (Patch 2.4.2)

Not going to lie this quest sucks.... the drop is very rare... I had to kill over 50 whelps just to get it!!!

By Kashensu (114 1) on 2009/11/04 (Patch 3.2.2)

I gained over a 1/4 of my exp bar and i must have cleared the area of the whelps at least 10 times. But I finally got it on my 150th(?) kill.

ferai on 2008/09/03 (Patch 2.4.3)

By Zizarz (2,065 6·23) on 2009/05/27 (Patch 3.1.2)

This is the most annoying quest ever!

I killed around 150 drakes, then I skipped the quest cause it made no sense to search for it..

By Sempra (11,130 3·15·77) on 2010/02/11 (Patch 3.3.2)

Cleared the area maybe 7-8 times, read some posts on it, then after about 6 kills it dropped. Pain in the попа, but the feeling of triumph you get when it does drop is wicked.

By Granger (168 1) on 2009/01/07 (Patch 3.0.3)

For skinners, this quest is a paradise (the longer it goes on, the more skins)...

Regardless, I got the heart after a level and a half of grinding these mobs :(. (41 to 42)

By meaky (519 6·9) on 2008/01/19 (Patch 2.3.2)

Wow, this drop rate is absurd..

By Nusos (110 2) on 2007/09/03 (Patch 2.1.3)

Took me ~130 kills to get this heart. As a 46 rogue this took ~1.5 hours of non stop killing. No pet dropped though through out all these kills.

By Izzore (310 4·3) on 2008/07/15 (Patch 2.4.3)

the drop rate is really..extremely low..just keep farming and u will get lots of gold with..at least..i got few green and blue item when doing this quest..1st time i go for the elite dragons..then i go killing the small one.drop by the small one...

By DSKKorp (396 5) on 2008/02/25 (Patch 2.3.3)

Man...besides the fact that the drop rate is crap, this quest really sucks for a fire mage..XD

By mjsinjapan (652 6) on 2008/12/12 (Patch 3.0.3)

Droprate is still terribal, killed about 60 whelps and the elites before I got the quest item.

Do you really think that all comments from TBC and WOTLK are absolutely relevant on classic server? Especially those from period with achievements  for companion collection which drop from the same mob? :D Do you really think that database with added kills done by all those companion farmers AND kills by groups formed by 2 factions clearing to 4 pillars AND kills from 2 factions doing alchemy quests will still show you the correct percentage? This is quest item, not a regular item, that really makes a difference. I don't like to repeat myself but you seem not to understand my previous post.

And to keep the level of absurd high enough please post "proofs" from WoD period next time. I wish them to be scrollable.

:D You still can't understand the difference between quest items and non-quest items and how databases show their droprates?

Let me provide you Evidence with another example :

The Drake loot table apparently shows 1.1% Droprate Chance for Elite which provide Evidence for this http://web.archive.org/web/20060616133055/http://thottbot.com/?n=389744

Now here is another Example to explain you why :

Apparently in this Lake shows "Overall population Catch" and shows for those items 1.9%

Droprate https://web.archive.org/web/20070909141335/http://thottbot.com/i6718

But when you click the Lake table it shows 15% :

https://web.archive.org/web/20071130013810/http://thottbot.com/zf456

In this  case for Heart both Overall and Direct loot Table for Heart Droprate shows 1.1% :

Overall droprate 1,1%  :

http://web.archive.org/web/20060427224359/http://www.thottbot.com/?i=12514

Direct loot Table explained shows 1.1% :

http://web.archive.org/web/20060617184039/http://thottbot.com/?n=397859

If this is not enough evidence for you, honestly i don't know what else could be.

I don't think Killerduki that you should write anything in bugtracker about the droprates, analyzing resources seem to be too difficult task for you. Others have to verify information that you provide. It's fine for me if developers will know how statistics for this quest item were created, who were killing the mobs and for what reason, you don't have to understand Killerduki.

Same mobs are killed for:

Badlands Reagent Run II - alliance quest

Badlands Reagent Run II - horde quest

Broken Alliances - horde quest

Tremors of the Earth - alliance quest

Dark Whelpling - companion with extemely low chance to drop

For all those people quest item will never drop so they will always lower the statistics of percentage. Whole other faction is killing those mobs for different reason and will never get this item, but kills are added to the count.
