Error starting the WoW.exe

So I did everything I was supposed (at least I think I did ). Downloaded and extracted to program files x86. i changed the realmlist.wtf to what was specified but when I click on WoW.exe I get this error. http://s38.photobucket.com/user/Swiftstickler/media/wow_error_zpsd9nnx7ws.png.html?filters[user]=145891643&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=0 What have I done wrong and how can I fix it? Install to C:\Games\WoW or something similar instead of under Program Files.

Sadly that didn't work either. Maybe it downloaded wrong/unzipped bad or something. I'll try downloading it again and see if I can get it to work. I really want to experience some vanilla WoW. I never got to play it back in the day.

That error I think would be possibly corrected if you had a server to connect to.  Since the server is not online I doubt you're going to have any luck in that regard.  It happens when your client side data doesn't match the server's data.  I don't know if that error happens for any other reason.  Check error 134 on web.  At any rate there's no server to connect to now.

I think it's possible that security and/or firewall settings are messing with the opening installation or the download. Try running the program with whatever security situation you have off and see if that MPQ file repairs itself, then turn your stuff back on.

Ahh I wasn't aware the server was not up. I did extract it again and this time it was a sound mpq and not the terrain one that was corrupt/missing. So I am guessing it just isn't unpacking correctly. I will continue my efforts and thanks for the help Ellipsea and Pottu!

 

Another question. Is the server down until the stress tests are complete? Or is it just some small maintenance that they are doing currently? Sorry to be of bother

I think any of those MPQ file would atempt to self correct if they were communicating wth the server.

 

The stress test is the only scheduled event for the servers.  There will be no game until the install is complete at some unspecified time in the future.

I was able to launch the game fine earlier today, even though the servers were offline.

Most likely he has not, but what he said and I agree, there is no need for any kind of connection to start the client.

Move the game from program files, that folder has restrictions regarding file access for normal users, or lauch with admin rights.

im also having a problem in which i have changed the realm-list to what they said you had to change it to and when i press wow.exe my file explorer freezes and nothing happens and i cant even shut down the frozen file explorer because it doesn't come up in programs running please could someone help me i just wanna play when it launches.

Sounds like something went wrong when you installed the vanilla client. Uninstall and redo it.

 

If you downloaded a "wow.rar" or a "wow.zip" file, remember that you need to actually extract its contents somewhere on your computer, If you just open the archive with WinRar or 7-Zip or some other similar program and try to run "wow.exe", it will crash.

hey ,so i re downloaded the game and extracted everything however the problem is still happening, also my wow.exe is just called wow and my lancher.exe is just called launcher for some reason, i am also running windows 10 if that matters. when  i click the launcher it opens a tab to press play but when i press play nothing happens but when i press wow nothing happens my file explorer just freezes. thx for the help so far

That's because the default setting is to hide the file types when looking at folders. You can safely delete launcher, it's completely useless and will just lead you astray.

As for why wow itself would be freezing your system, I cannot say. It's a pretty well made program and runs without problems on 64-bit systems as well.

Do you have the ACL enabled? and perhaps the layer with the prompt is not visible? Can you post a image if something is visible when "file explorer freezes"?

Try to run as administrator: right click on wow.exe and choose "Run as administrator".

Check your Data folder, and see if the MPQ files are there, if they are not, you may need to try to redownload the zip file again, or find another source to download it from.

so i tried running it as administrator and nothing happend, also i don know where to find acl and see if its enabled, also the MQP files are there i cant post a picture because there is no popup when i press on the app all that happens is my file explorer freezes im running widows 10 if thats any help
