PvP Sham Ele vs Enh discussion

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

Fellow Shaman here, Vanilla noob(been playing since TBC), looking for new point of views, comments and discussions!

I am leveling my Shaman on Nost PvP and getting closer to hit lvl 60 each day. And there is this little thing that is starting to drive me crazy. Can't really decide if I wanna be rolling Enhancement or Elemental on LVL 60, keep in mind my main focus is PVP and I am aiming for high ranks. Before you start posting things like  "play what you fits your playstyle/ what you like" I enjoy playing both melee(have feral druid history) and ranged(mage/shadow priest history) so for me it is just a little part of the overall decision.

I have spent lot of time already checking talents, building different talent builds, reading other vanilla forums, watching videos and so on. I think I have the idea about the different specs. To bring up some useful information for readers that might be going through similar decision, these are something you might want to tknow:

Enhancement:

Pro:

  • clothie / healer slayer
  • able to deal DMG even without mana/with silence
  • chance of insane burst (great fun, still having chance in fight even if you have way less hp than your oponent)
  • better mobility (improved Ghost wolf), and still in a movement
  • profiting more from PVP gear(this one is a huge factor for me and will get to it later)
  • probably slightly stronger in 1on1(in my opinion)
  • defensive talents(parry, grounding totem cd reduce)

Cons:

  • Extremely mana hungry
  • need to get at melee range(can be kited around)
  • RNG factor with Windfury
  • Easily getting to wrong position resulting into instant death

Elemental:

Pro:

  • Ranged DPS - better position, being able to deal dmg without giving chance to get opponent anywhere close to you
  • Resto tree is always included(in enha I would preffer to run with  Ele), means, nature swiftness, more effective with healing(less mana cost for heals/totems + higher crit chance)
  • Way bigger mana pool - to me it seems that Ele is able to deal his big damage way longer, good for mass fights
  • really good in big fights
  • good offheals

Cons:

  • no mana no fun
  • needs to keep of distance
  • PvP  gear not that usable?

There surely is more, please let me know your thoughts about pro's and cons and I can edit this for future readers.

My question now really isn't which one I should play, as both to me seem as viable and funny specs, excelling at different things. But my question is about the PVP gear.

What do you, experienced vanilla veterans, think about equipping these different specs at lvl 60? Would I need to spend lot of time in PvE content (I am ok with some, but preferring pvp) if I would like to gear Elemental? Or can I get to a pretty decent gear just by running 5mans and PvP?

Are there any good Ele pieces from BG vendor(I know about caster dagger from AB vendor)?

Any comparison in equipping of these two would be highly appreciated!

Also if there is anyone in PvP active guild, what do you think that PvP guild is requiring more, ele or enh?

thanks guys for reading this and for reply that might be useful to me or to others

I think that every shaman should have gear for all specs, should try every spec, trying hybrids for different styles of play. So if you will tire of one, you just need to spend several gold coins and take another set from your bank.

I like hybrid, ench gear, but more elem talents - with 100% of bonus elem crit and 3 talents in faster lightnings, and all in ench (28/23). With hybrid gear (spd, AP, stamina) I can kill in melee and also kill almost dead target that running away (oh, this problem of shaman, no good crowd control), thanks Turtle for lightnings. Or you can do 31/20, so your bleeding enemy will always get critical chainlightning in his back in 2 secs.

I think every Shaman who wants to PvP should be playing a Tauren simply for the War Stomp. It doesn't GCD so you can cast while enemies are stunned plus Shamans are hurting for crowd control.

Other than that, for PvPing I would say that 30/0/21 Elemental is best. Enhance Shamans suffer from the need to enter melee range except they don't have stealth or sprint (unless you count Ghost Wolf) or charge or intercept or any CC to help them close the gap. All they have is Frost Shock and Earthbind Totem. Enemies will literally run circles around enhance shamans and kite and CC them to death. Elemental Shamans on the other hand do not get kited because they can just cast from a distance. Enhancement Shamans also like to rely on windfury procs to destroy enemies but you only have a 20% chance of triggering windfury per swing. You can't expect to just run up to someone and immediately devastate them with a Windfury. Enhancement Shamans do get faster Ghost Wolf casts but with 21 resto you can use Nature's Swiftness for an instant Ghost Wolf which is better for Warsong Gulch. Other than that Elemental Shamans do extremely high damage, can burst on demand with a Trinket NS Lightning Bolt combo (potentially War Stomp Trinket Chain Lightning + NS Lightning Bolt), can wear a shield without wrecking their DPS, and have much better heals.

In case you're wondering what Elemental Shaman PvP is like, here's a PvP video. Part 1:

Part 2:

Bear in mind this guy is not playing a Tauren (no War Stomp casts) or using any potions or Engineering items.

Try 26/25/0: http://db.vanillagaming.org/?talent#hEczxchoZxVfzV0u

I would avoid any lightning talents, since you want to be using your insta cast spells mostly during a fight. I'm so used to having Reverberation, i can't imagine not getting it. Put points into Elemental Warding as filler, which isnt bad since this is a PvP build. Eye of the storm is your Healing Focus alternative. Enhancement portion is straightforward. Sure you don't get Stormstrike, but at a 20sec cd, it didn't seem worthwhile. I've found you don't really have time to cast lightning spells really, that kind of time is better spent dropping totems according to the situation and running/positioning ur character, which you obviously cant do while casting. Range isnt too much of an issue since you can shut down basically any caster. Stack str(AP), spell dmg, agi(crit), and spell crit.

Here are examples of wut hybrid gear sets looks like (doesn't seem to count set bonuses tho):
