Graphics/ - unable to change above 1024*768

Recommended Posts

First of all,
just heard of this and it is a blast to log in and see so many people playing and a real nostalgia-kick.
Not sure if ths has been posted before - I couldn't find a search function in the Help & Support section.

In any case - I am unable to change graphics option higher than 1024*768 in the video options, which causes my screen to be very small and narrow (playing on laptop).
Is this something which is locked by the server or is it something I need to adjust in the game-files?

Any help is appreciated, really want to get in and play (with a normal screen)!

Many thanks! :)

I don't know if this works, but inside your WTF folder is a file called config.wtf. in that text file, you will find your resolution. Try manually adjusting that and see how it goes.

I've never tested it, but I know that is where the setting is. Let me know how it goes!

Enter your WoW directory, and find the folder titled "WTF". Inside will be two files, one of them will be named "Config.wtf", or "Config".

Inside this file will be a massive string of words, you want to look for "SET gxResolution "(Graphics setting.)"

For example, mine is in this format: SET gxResolution "1360x768"

You're going to want to replace the numbers inside the quotation marks with your desired resolution. IE; SET gxResolution "1920x1200" for 1080p.

Good luck!

Thx for quick reply. Tried this actually but game resetted to 1024 upon launch. Odd problem to have in the first place.
I could bypass the issue by running the game in "windowed mode" but it doesn't feel like a permanent solution and I'm not sure if the game uses the graphics card instead of the processors when running windowed. :/

Anyone had this issue in the past? (hope I'm not he first at least).

I personally had this issue and resolved it by using directx 9. You could try that. Make sure your graphics driver is updated. Also you can try to set the resolution in game as the lowest possible, apply, and then restart the client. That sometimes makes it pop up.

If you're using windows 8, it could possibly be an issue with how your BIOS interacts with your GPU. You could try disabling secure boot and enabling legacy drivers.

Since you are using a laptop, I am doubting that you are using dual monitor, but in case you are, that could be the issue too.

If you have retail wow installed as well, Maybe Pottu's idea would work.

"I want to play with a massive resolution but my WoW client only goes up to X. Can I make it bigger?"

Yes you can. Interestingly, retail WoW and vanilla WoW share some Windows registry hooks. The easiest workaround is to install retail WoW, launch it once to set up the resolution that you want (you don't even have to wait for it finish downloading and trial accounts are free) and then launch vanilla WoW - when it asks to reset settings because of a hardware change, decline and your super-duper-amazing 4K resolution will now be working in vanilla WoW.

Many thanks for all your replies! Much appreciated!

I don't have retail-wow installed, nor dual monitors.
I'm running Windows 7 - perhaps partially outdated since I've blocked windows-update completely due to the Windows 10 auto-upgrade upon updating Windows (I want to stick with Windows 7).

I will try the DirectX solution - but then, are you saying I need to install DirectX 9.0 (i.e. "overwrite" DirectX 11)?
Won't that cause me having to re-install DirectX 11 every time I want to play a "newer" game and then install back DirectX 9.0 when I want to play ElysiumWoW? Feels like another temporary solution if so? :P

Will try to update my graphics driver as well but I think it is up to date though.

At the office now but will update once home later tonight.

Thx again for all the help!

Oh, nevermind about directx since you are using win7. Try putting resolution to lowest and then restarting. If that doesn't work, make sure your drivers are updated and update them if not. You can always played in windowed borderless worst case scenario.

I am using Windows 7 too and I play at 3440X1440 resolution.

I also used to play at 6800X2880 or something which is the above resolution three times upscaled via DSR.

I didn't have to do anything special for these resolutions to show up on the client. Not sure why the OP has a problem.

OP, what is the make and model of your display device aka GPU?

Ok, so I downloaded the newest AMD software (from AMD's homepage mind you) which was supposed to replace Catalyst Control Center.("CCC").
Computer got extremely slow and I couldn't start up Elysoum/Vanila wow without crashing the game out to windows.

Uninstalled and then downloaded and installed CCC 15.7.1 which is unable to detect my graphics card completely (ATi Radeon HD 7610M). Trying to find old CC but it seems to be near impossible. Been googling my fingers off half the night without finding the version previous o CCC 15.7. (Looking for one with last update around 2014 I think, there you could manually choose your graphic driver).

I can run the game but it runs from the Inted HD Graphics which is less than ideal and it lags a lot and crashed eery time I try to change anything with the graphics or alt+tab out to windows.

I read somewhere one can manually change which GPU the computer should use through BIOS but I have no idea how this is done. If this is a recommended solution I'd gadly take some guidance.

Otherwise if anyone has any idea where I can find old CCC supporting this specific card I'd be extremely grateful!

Goddangit this is frustrating! :(

Sounds like your discrete GPU is dead.

Open your Device Manager and tell us whether there is anything listed below DISPLAY ADAPTERS and what is that, like so:

VgBCUU3.jpg

Note that laptops are not ideal platforms for gaming, and discrete GPU's will eventually fail after a couple of years of heavy gaming. This normal and common.

While AMD GPU's are not inferior to NVIDIA GPU's at all times, WoW was really designed for NVIDIA cards and should play better with an NVIDIA card. Not so important for WoW Vanilla these days ofc unless you have a low end/low tier GPU like the one you 've got.

Okay. So after 2 evenings of intense googling I finally found the solution. Had to uninstall the whole thing (graphics card) and re-install it from scratch. Everything works fine now (fingers crossed). I just played for approx 1 hours without issues and CCC manages the GPU properly.

Well I'm a console-gamer normally. Bought this laptop in 2012 in order to play Mass Effect 3 (which it plays on 1366*768 and high settings without issues even to this day, mods included). So I "normally" don't play on my PC unless I feel for nostalgia trips like Vanilla wow and other older games. :P
Though I do try to get professional help to open the computer and clean if from dust every once a year or so - so hopefully it will hold together a while longer until I decide to buy something newer. :)

Thanks for all the replies and tips! Much appreciated!
Just in case for future references - this solved my problems (youtube link)  note I had in the time of this post ATI Radeon HD 76100M ona laptop:
