Undertanker 88 Report post Posted November 7, 2016 This is a guide I have created for myself to judge the value of tanking items and which to use to build the best balance between threat AND mitigation. This guide does not take into account, chance on hit items such as HoJ or Deathbringer Proc as these are pure TPS items which are situation for lower content. That being said, you should aim to keep above 400 DEF with your TPS items on. I have broken down stats to = Tank Points (TP) Spoiler 1 Stam = 1.5 TP 1 Agil = 1.5 TP 1 Block = 2 TP 1 Block Val = 0.33TP 1 Hit = 18 TP 1 Crit = 9 TP 1 Dodge = 10 TP 1 Parry = 12.5 TP 1 DEF = 4 TP 50 Armor = 1 TP 1 Str = 0.225 TP 1 AP = 0.1 TP 1 DPS = 3.5 TP 1 Skill (+1-5) = 12.24 + (Weapon DPS * 0.056) 1 Skill (+6-10) = 3.24 TP + (Weapon DPS * 0.028) 1H Weapon Enchant 15 agil = 22.5 TP 1H Weapon Enchant Crusader = 35 TP (if 100% up time, consideration of heal). A weapon of 2.4 speed or slower will have a greater overall benefit of using Crusader, consider this the breaking point. If your weapon is faster than 2.4, 15 agility should be sought after. Only exception would be if your TPS weapon is also your Mitigation weapon. (Ideally you have a top Avoidance/Mitigation weapon with 15 Agi and a TPS weapon with Crusader) **Note - Adjust Base DEF/Stam to the need of each fight's mechanics** Using the key above, we can break down the value of individual items. I have broken down a list of the most sought after and controversial items per slot to obtain a better understanding of how those items perform in terms of overall tanking (Effective Health Pool / Avoidance / Mitigation / Threat) Tank Weapons: Spoiler Bloodlord's Defender (48.2 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=19867 15 Stam + 80 Armor + 4 Def + 48.2 DPS = 208.8 TP (+74.69 if Human) Claw of the Black Drake (56.3 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=19365 13 Str + 7 Stam + 1 Crit + 56.3 DPS = 212.475 TP Doom's Edge (51.5 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=19362 16 Agil + 9 Str + 7 Stam + 51.5 DPS = 216.77 TP (+75.92 if Orc) Sickle of Unyielding Strength (51.4 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=21392 15 Str + 6 Agil + 9 Stam + 4 Def + 51.4 DPS = 221.775 TP (+75.59 if Orc) Quel'Serrar w/ proc (50% uptime) (52.5 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=18348 12 Stam + 150 Armor (50% uptime) + 6.5 Def (50% uptime) + 52.5 DPS = 230.75 TP (+75.9 if Human) Blessed Airaji War Axe (60.6 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=21242 9 Stam + 60.6 DPS + 14 AP = 236 TP (+78.16 if Orc) Spineshatter (52.5 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=19335 16 Stam + 5 Def + 9 STR + 52.5 DPS = 236.425 TP (+75.9 if Human) Hatchet of Sundered Bone (65.4 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=22816 + 36 AP + 65.4 DPS + 1 Crit = 241.5 TP (+79.51 if Orc) Crul'shorukh, Edge of Chaos (62.8 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=19363 13 Stam + 36 AP + 62.8 DPS = 242.9 TP (+78.78 if Orc) Iblis, Blade of the Fallen Seraph (62.8 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=23014 + 62.8 DPS + 1 Hit + 1 Crit = 249.4 TP (+78.78 if Human) Blessed Qiraji Pugio (60.6 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=21244 7 Stam + 1 Hit + 1 Crit + 18 AP + 60.6 DPS = 251.4 TP Anubisath Warhammer (52.5 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=21837 7 Stam + 32 AP + 52.5 DPS + 4 Skill = 258.17 TP (+30.78 if Human) Maexxna's Fang (65.3 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=22804 8 Stam + 1 Hit + 36 AP + 65.3 DPS = 262.15 TP Widow's Remorse (62.8 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=22806 17 Stam + 100 Armor + 62.8 DPS + 1 Hit = 265.3 TP (+78.78 if Human) Blessed Qiraji War Hammer (60.7 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=21268 12 Stam + 10 Str + 8 DEF +70 Armor + 60.7 DPS = 266.1 TP (+78.196 if Human) The Castigator (65.4 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=22808 9 Stam + 65.4 DPS + 1 Hit + 1 Crit + 16 AP = 271 TP (+79.51 if Human) Maladath, Runed Blade of the Black Flight (56.4 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=19351 56.4 DPS + 1 Parry + 4 Skill = 271.49 TP (+34.674 if Human) Harbinger of Doom (65.3 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=23044 8 Stam + 65.3 DPS + 1 Hit + 1 Crit + 8 Agil = 279.55 TP Gressil, Dawn of Ruin (73.1 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=23054 15 Stam + 73.1 DPS + 40 AP = 282.35 TP (+81.66 if Human) Death's Sting (66.4 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=21126 10 Stam + 18 AP + 66.4 DPS + 3 Skill = 284.665 TP Kingsfall (73.1 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=22802 16 Agil + 73.1 DPS + 1 Hit + 1 Crit = 306.85 TP The Hungering Cold (73.0 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=23577 14 Stam + 73.0 DPS + 140 AC + 6 Skill = 366.224 TP (+18.24 if Human) Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker (142.42 DPS) http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=19019 8 Stam + 5 Agil + 142.42 DPS + 10% ATK Spd decrease + ((92 threat from speed debuff + 149 NR debuff) *.25) = 687.34 TP (+87.24 if Human) Tank Shields: Spoiler Stygian Buckler http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=23238 3106 AC + 59 Block Value + Unknown Threat Amount from Proc = ?? DownToFarm 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2016 I understand you have to mix/match items for different fights for tps/def requirements so here's a question. When you only get to choose one, and considering this shows the dps at higher tp than the def one, would you ever take the dps aq ring over the def one for tps set w/ acuria or do you secure the def one and use acurria/qsr/qiraji fury for the tps set?
Undertanker 88 Report post Posted November 21, 2016 Are you referring to Ring of the Qiraji Fury? I would go with: Signet Ring of the Bronze Dragonflight (DPS Ring) for threat and pair it with Band of Accuria for 2 crit, 2 dodge (before buffs), 3 hit and 23 stam. If not going for 8/9 hit (rage starved setup), and using 6 hit setup (specials hit cap), I'd then take off the Signet Ring of the Bronze Dragonflight and put on Ring of Emperor Vek'lor to pair with: Band of Accuria. If you need a full tank setup for fights like Patch in Naxx, you can then put on Angelista's Touch with Ring of Emperor Vek'lor

Zuat 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) This is a guide I have created for myself to judge the value of tanking items and which to use to build the best balance between threat AND mitigation. This guide does not take into account, chance on hit items such as HoJ or Deathbringer Proc as these are pure TPS items which are situation for lower content. That being said, you should aim to keep above 400 DEF with your TPS items on. I have broken down stats to = Tank Points (TP) 1 Stam = 1.5 TP 1 Agil = 1.5 TP 1 Block = 2 TP 1 Block Val = 0.33TP 1 Hit = 18 TP 1 Crit = 9 TP 1 Dodge = 10 TP 1 Parry = 12.5 TP 1 DEF = 4 TP 50 Armor = 1 TP 1 Str = 0.225 TP 1 AP = 0.1 TP 1 DPS = 3.5 TP 1 Skill = 2 TP 1H Weapon Enchant (15 Agil/Crusader) = 22.5 TP (Ideally you have a top Avoidance/Mitigation weapon with 15 Agi and a TPS weapon with Crusader) **Note - Adjust Base DEF/Stam to the need of each fight's mechanics** 1 Str is 0.225 TP.. 14 Str is less than 1 DPS in TP. How does that make sense? 14 Str will give you 1 DPS + shield block value. Parry increases your damage taken by making you attack more often with parry haste. Shouldn't have more tank points than dodge. Block chance is absolutely useless. Should award -TP to discourage ppl to use it. Crusader is useless alliance tanking unless your guild takes 8 min to kill every boss. On 1.3 speed weapons +5 weapon damage gives more DPS than crusader. Armor reduction gets exponentially better, so your idea won't work for it. Avoidance is bad tanking stat, never go for it. To make you easy to heal aquire defense cap, stack hp and armor. Pretty much the only avoidance you should ever be taking is if the gear has higher base stats, armor or offensive stats as hit if you need that. Parry will also grant you Parry haste = more white hit for rage or faster heroic strikes when you do have rage. Your math is wrong about crusader vs +5 damage even on 1.3 speeds, we've already addressed it on Nost forums. Also, with rage from incoming damage most likely gonna be adjusted to post-armor mitigation, 1.3 weapons will be nil except on Val. Not sure what 8 minutes vs 2 minutes on a fight matters, should still have the same average up-time on the same weapon. Armor reduction gives you the same amount of time to live per armor point, and does not change exponentially at any point. Avoidance is a bad tanking stat....... I'm done..... Armor reduction gives you the same amount of time to live per armor point, and does not change exponentially at any point. Avoidance is a bad tanking stat....... I'm done..... What it means is that most fights are very short on nost, 2 minutes is a bad example: 2 min is a long fight on nost. most fights are 20-60 seconds. For simplicity lets say a fight is 60 seconds. Boss swing timer is 1,5 seconds. 40 attacks in 60 seconds. out of those a warrior with 18% parry will parry 40*0.18 = 7,2 times. That gives 7,2*0,24 = 1,7 extra attacks. What a gain! That like 2-4 TPS at most FOR YOUR WHOLE PARRY CHANCE. Surely it's nice with some extra attacks but it's not a noticeable gain. +It's rng of rng, as if relying on crusader procs wasn't bad enough when tanking. If you're right about crusader, consider why every tank in top guilds are clueless (?) and don't use crusader. Armor reduction gets gets worth more simply because 1% of reduction is worth more depending on how much you already have. 1% increase at 50% reduction will reduce your physical damage taken by 2% while 1% at 0% reduction will reduce with 1%. I guess saying it gets exponentially gets better is the wrong phrasing for it, rather it doesn't get worse for every armor you get. Unlike Dodge and Parry which will gradually get worth less the more avoidance you have. In essence armor never gets worse. Undertanker 88 Report post Posted December 11, 2016 You are still wrong on your armor math. People didn't use Crusader on Nost including me cause we already had infinite rage cause of incoming damage rage gains not taking armor into consideration. "Minor gains" are what optimization is about. You asked why it had higher value, I answered it. Rather than trying to knit-pick 1 stat value or another, look at each item lot in my list and tell me what is out of order from an OVERALL threat/EHP/advoidance/mitigation standpoint.

Whats wrong with the armor math? "minor gains are what optimization is about". Why would anyone wanting to minmax wanna break down stats into a fixed value when tanking stats are dependant on how much hit, crit, avoidance and armor you already have? It would maybe make sense if you were naked and had 0 stats.
Undertanker 88 Report post Posted December 11, 2016 (edited) Armor does not get exponentially better. Each 100 armor adds the same amount of time to live with no heals received regardless if you go from 100 to 200 armor or 7900 to 8000 armor. Nothing exponential about it. No, but armor becomes better as reduction gets higher. That's why you cannot just say 100 armor is "worth" this. Same goes for avoidance and crit shits get worse the more you have.
vido 1 Report post Posted December 11, 2016 (edited) your relative damage reduction increases the more reduction you alreadyhave, that's true. which is why blizz devz added diminishing returns to armor, so that the amount of relative damage reduction that 100 armor gives for example stays the same no matter how much damage reduction you have already acquired. until you hit the 75% cap of course. to comment on the stat weights: crit should be equal to hit since getting the 8% cap isn't exactly hard. DEF is overvalued by quite a bit in general. Weapon DPS is largely irrelevant unless you're rage starving; it should be ignored as a stat. You're also grossly undervaluing armor for most encounters. Undertanker 88 Report post Posted December 12, 2016 (edited) No getting 8% hit isn't "hard" but I am only including items that also have EPH and or mitigation/avoidance/def. So not taking Lionheart helm into my OVERALL item set. I know crit > hit once you are hit capped, but that simply isn't in the item budget while gearing around keeping your def/stam high. Point out which item I am undervaluing armor on and why it should be lower/higher than another item in the same slot. The only slot I can see that being a debate is belt, though Ossirian's Binding gives 2 crit, 1 dodge, 1 hit, 19 stam = more while buffed due to agil and stam. While it lacks the AP of Onslaught, it has more crit, has avoidance, and more stam than it does. Mail bracers, no question the hit + crit/dodge from agil on them as well exceed the armor loss from Bracer of Wrath from an overall tankability standpoint. For weapon DPS, it does matter as higher dps weapons will give you more damage = more threat, not just for rage starved as your heroic strike will do more damage as well. Weapon speed though will be determined on if rage from incoming damage is adjusted (Which did happen), if so, 1.3 speed will only be good on Val. Even then a 2 dps 1.3 dagger vs a 46 dps 1.3 dagger.... which would you take. It really was included to show there is value in items like Crul'shok, Claw of the Black Drake and what not. If you take the bottom item from each slot given, you get: 93 Def (using Hammer for tanking) 85 without hammer. Add on +14 for zg enchant x2 and +10 from talents, so you'll have 109 Def with a non def weapon, and 117 Def with BiS mitigation weapon. Can get up to 118 and 126 def respectively if using 3x +3 DEF kits on gloves boots, chest. 9 Hit. = cap is 8.6%. +191 agility. Can get up to 217 if using +4 stats chest +7 boots +15 gloves. This is before world buffs! So lets say I go full agility except movement speed boots, 210: My list gives me 9 hit *full cap, 109 Def (since I use Thunderfury), and enough agility to equal 10.5 extra dodge and extra crit. Each of those items has highest armor rating on the gear anyways except bracer, so I'm not gimping myself by taking 200 less armor. Like the OP mentions, adjust base DEF/Stam for each fight as needed. Since some fights you don't want to leave yourself open for a possible crit. Avoidance increases spike damage and its much easier to heal a steady hp drop rather than some guy who dodges 3,4 times then gets obliterated.

ourslaxiste 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2017 Hi ! Don't know if it is the right place to post my question but you seems to be a pretty good mathemagician so maybe you can help me ! It is about the impale spec for main tanks. I talked with our main tank and he told me that impale adds something like 150-200 dmg on his crit shield slam in general. I was then wondering if it is really worth compared to 2% more crit if he had a "classic spec" (regardless of other utilitaries talents he could get instead of this shitty fckin' debuff and Impale). He is full T2, but doesn't have TF nor DFT. I know it's a short description but I just need a theoretical insight (impale vs 2% crit basically). I may be completely wrong but giving what he told me, I calculated that even full world buffs his impale up his aggro by something like 4%... (maybe less, way less without world buffs).
Undertanker 88 Report post Posted March 16, 2017 (edited) That is always a great question, and has been brought up previously so I'm glad I don't have to do any number crunching tonight. (as I already have). I won't give you a hard time on not finding it, as it was buried on page 4 of the forums: I give you: https://forum.elysium-project.org/topic/29931-is-impale-spec-still-the-best-threat-spec/ I break down the numbers of increased DPS for the abilities used that are affected by Impale. Even at world buffed (25% crit 5/5 crul / 23% if impale) the average DPS gain is 3.46% from those abilities (not modified by threat multiplies or def stance). This does not translate to a 3.46% increase of unmodified threat. Reason being is the 2% less crit chance the impale spec has that will affect your white hits granting you a slightly lower rage-gain per second which translates into less threat moves possible. This puts the total increased TPS in the 2.5%-2.75% range. I hold firm that 8/5/38 as my go to spec due to the corrections to the rage-gain reductions of incoming damage. The difference is TPS is so small to give up many valuable talents in the protection tree. Improved taunt is extremely important in for when your taunt is resisted, as it allows you to mocking blow on a resist and taunt is available again prior to mocking blow/challenging shout expiring. Imp sunder armor is vital as well due to rage starvations. Walgrave presented an impale spec that covers both of my requirements of imp taunt and imp sunder as most impale specs skip those. 17/3/31 You'll notice the main things missing in this spec are Imp SW (which you can do w/o in a lot of cases but still has great value) and 10 Def from skipping anticipation. While 10 Def for 5 talents may not seems like a lot, it limits your itemization greatly. Opting to take 10 defense in your talent tree allows you to wear more +hit gear while maintaining the same DEF level. The best example would be rings. Using Heavy Dark Iron Ring + Overlord's Crimson Band as an example, this ring pairing makes up for the def you missed out on in your talent tree +2 more def, while I can use Band of Accuria + Don Julio's Band and have +3 hit % and -2 def compared to somebody who took impale (w/ imp sunder/taunt). I can reach + 140 DEF cap 8/8 T2 w/ Thunderfury while having improved movement speed boots and +4 all stats chest with Band of Accuria and Saytr's bow (3 hit). For a person using the impale spec above, they would have to have +3 def chest, +3 def boots, and use heavy dark iron ring to be 141 def. Their def cap set will only allow them to have 1% hit. 2% hit loss, and -8% movement speed, and slower agility to maintain crit immune, doesn't justify the very small % of threat increase. Edit: Even if you were not a TF tank and used Spineshatter for your DEF cap set, to use Band of Accuria giving you the 3% hit, a 5/5 anticipation warrior could do the same and use T1 gloves and bracers of true flight w/ 9 stam enchant and still keep def cap, giving 5% hit vs 3% hit. It's overkill, couldn't you use more hit or run the modified impale spec with imp taunt/sunder and just loose 10 points on def?
Haestingas 30 Report post Posted March 16, 2017 The issue is what do you gain from the impale spec. From a threat perspective it's only good if you are a speedrunning world buff guild where your tanks don't lose your world buffs. I'd even further say that in current gearing it would really only be viable in MC since the bosses hit so weak that you can wear a bunch of threat gear and not risk dying. On Kronos using impale was more common for 2 big reasons and neither of them apply to Anathema at this time. The first being that T2.5 has a very large amount of crit while still retaining a lot of mitigation, and the 2nd being that Vaels BA doesn’t kill tanks after Vael dies. The Vael thing is HUGE because on Anathema a tank WILL die and lose world buffs. This makes that tanks job a nightmare after that because keeping up with threat when you are not world buffed but your DPS does have wbuffs, and now your impale spec is terrible because you just lost 13% crit.
Undertanker 88 Report post Posted March 16, 2017 We have the second or third tank be the primary tank on Val, to ensure the 2 tanks of the night for later bosses have buffs
