Random thought about Gold Sellers

Recommended Posts

I've thought about this one quite a bit, ever since I saw the first gold spammer in Vanilla WoW back in the day.

Companies like money. What better way is there to make money than by making the game better for the players? Well especially on free servers, there's really no money generated by creating a superior quality game for the populace if there's no cash venue. So!

I always wondered, what if 'they' (they being whoever is running the server, be it Blizzard, Nost, Feenix, whatever) actually sell gold to players. Now I know what you're thinking, that's blasphemy right? Well, what if they BANNED the player they sold the gold to, and kept the money? That way, the cheaters are paying to keep the servers alive and fluent, which ultimately makes the game better for honest players via server upkeep and banned cheaters.

Just a thought that's been boiling in my noodle for many, many years now.

Gold from the gold farmers is not supposed to be there in the first place. If the admin bans the gold farmers and keeps the gold to sell to others, it will artificially bid up the price level in the game economy, making it more difficult for other players to afford things they could otherwise afford.

This is at least partially pay-to-win which is against the very principle Elysium/Nostalrius stands for.

Blizz did get into the business by selling time.  Which is in essence a legal way of getting gold for cash.

That can't be done here for several reasons.  It's entirely against the philosophy and to involve themselves in cash could potentially create some legal difficulties down the road.

For clarification purposes:

I am not suggesting nor do I condone gold selling whatsoever.  The idea is that the people who run the server ban all gold sellers. Then, they create and sell gold themselves. After they sell the gold to player, said players account is then permanent banned for cheating (buying gold). This would A. Remove cheaters from the game and B. Create revenue for the server. Of course it'd all be shady, but it's a win/win. It's not like anybody is going to find out, let alone make a lawsuit out of it. The server is technically illegal as is.

I don't think it's coherent to sell gold to your players and then punish them for buying it. However, I agree with banning gold buyers/sellers, especially in crowded realms.

This thread reminds me of the Nost 1.0 conspiracy of a situation you are describing.

Gold selling spammers were muted, banned, the works.   However there was one specific company that never seemed to get muted or banned out of the masses.   There were mass conspiracy theories that the one not being banned was run by Nost themselves and became a small world chat - meme.

After months of seeing their spam it finally stopped.  Was quite funny though.

Selling gold in anyway shape or forum messes up the in game economy and should be discouraged at all costs.
