Playing PVP while not raiding at all - pre PVP equipment

(this entire post is about a possible scenario on the Fresh PVP Server launching in January)

Please forgive me shall this not be the correct place to consult with my question, however I feel that it belongs here out of all places.

 

First of all I gotta admit that I never played Vanilla aside from leveling to the 40s on old Nost once. I started playing the game during very early TBC and was an Arenajunkie all the way to wotlk, therefore my main focus while playing on Nostalrius will be PVP too (though I am aware of the fact that the experience will differ greatly from TBC/wotlk era Arenas).

However to my understanding there will be no "dedicated" PVP equipment till fairly late into the patches and up to that point most people just use regular PVE gear for doing PVP.

Lets say I don't want to raid at all, I get the BiS Pre-Raid gear (maybe even skill tailoring for it, before switching to Engineer after) and enchant it as good as I possibly can - will I still be able to hold out against most other players that are rocking PVE sets or is it a basically unbeatable advantage? 

I will most likely be rolling a mage, shall that hold any importance.

You'll be using the lvl 58 blue pvp sets, however the pve gear isn't really getting boosted until 1.5-1.6 anyway(correct me if I'm wrong, don't remember)

 

Anyway you'll do fine in the blue pvp set, I was rank 12 when the gear update happened on Nost pvp last year and when I had the lvl 58 blue set I was doing rather well against my pve geared counterparts.

Stick to pvp, but do get necessary pre-raid bis, or you'll fall behind severely

Hey man I'm really grateful for your reply, however there is one part that is confusing me slightly.

what did you mean by this? I thought I would do fine in the blue pvp set - until the "proper" PVP Sets come out? Or are you advising me to get the level 58 PVP Set while I work to get BiS Pre Raid equipment?

He means run your 5mans to get your pre raid/pvp bis, otherwise you'll be stuck with greens or equivalent while you get stomped by players who farmed this.

the "proper" PVP sets are likely to be updated in the naxx patch so you'll be stuck with 58 blues until then if that is the case. We'll find out later this week if they are keeping this change or reverting the update back to 1.7 patch.

I'm sorry but I still don't fully understand.

Do I pick the Level 58 PVP Set over the BiS 5man Pre-Raid equipment or not?

 

Edit: or do I use the PVP set and then get the BiS PVE items in the other slots? (no idea what the 58 pvp sets consist of)

He means you better pvp as well as pve for gear, or else you'll just be bottom tiered.

You should farm mostly late game dungeon blues combined with the PvP offpieces from WSG/AB/AV prior to obtaining the rank gear in order to stay competitive, as opposed to going straight into PvP with greens and getting dominated until you're R10 or so. Pre-Raid BIS is a good start, but keep in mind there may be other, more "PvP oriented" blues that include Stamina (which is valuable in PvP) as opposed to other stats. I would skim through the Mage Pre-Raid BIS lists that include secondary options and compare stats to see which would be more valuable in PvP. Some actual Pre-Raid "BIS" (BEST in slot) pieces may be worse than the secondary options due to sacrificing Stamina for maximizing DPS.

Gain rep in WSG/AB/AV. That is gonna be the sweet spot of any advantage for most classes. Your gear is mostly gonna be level 48-58 dungeon gear including some greens. Also almost every class can benefit from an epic through professions. I suggest looking here for some ideas to get you started.

Thanks Meddlmois for your question and the others for your helpfull answers.
I have the same plan for the fresh server, but I haven't decided which class to play. I first thought about warlock for the free mount. Can all classes compete in PvP without raiding ?
