That's silly. No server has stopped them so far, and they won't. The best you can do is eliminate them from the server. I mean, that is the topic being discussed, no? Oh wait, I'm incorrect, it relates to VPNS.

So do tell, how will banning VPNs stop people from farming gold, optimizing web searches, and all of the other (in)direct effects of gold sale?

(Hint: the problem isnt the farming of gold, it's the sale. The scope of the problem is this server, not the gold sellers website. The method of solving the problem should match the scope, lest we argue over impossibilities and delay actual solutions)

Developing a targeting system that would actually identify who the spammers/goldsellers are, and specifically ban those accounts / IP Addresses. Goldsellers have always been around... let them work on it, it'll settle down.

There are plenty of players who use VPNs for many many reasons. I'd rather not ban innocent players.

 

Also - I think it's naïve and narrow minded to think banning VPNs will get rid of goldsellers.

It will lock out china and eliminate 90% of the problem.

Of course there are gold farmers in other countries, but china has a real industry.

First off, what makes you a special snowflake that deserves more attention than other posters with your obnoxious font coloring?

Are you trying to deny that banning a critical tool used by spammers, sellers, and cheaters would have a positive outcome on the server as a whole?

Nice strawman. No one is claiming it will completely eradicate the gold market, just that it will effectively cripple it and the annoyances that are plaguing the server. The chat spam, whispers, guild invites and channel invites are incessant and probably just the beginning.

You didn't address anything. You claimed that they should claim a list of "keywords" to stop spam which they obviously already do. There is a problem with simple keywords and regular expressions, in that there is a million and a half different ways to use ascii to circumvent them.

All you seem to do is misrepresent people's arguments. I thought we were talking about VPNs and gold sellers?

You do understand that it doesn't work? There is still relentless spam despite their keyword list. They've already tried "your idea" and it hasn't accomplished anything. Which is why we need new measures, which brings us back to the very point of this thread. Glad you're caught up.

I still don't understand why we don't ban VPN's here. It is well known that this is where the majority of the issues are stemming from. The only ones who are opposed to it are people that cant play if they have to do it the legit way. I have met hackers on other servers that hacked code and did so without fear of getting banned because even if they banned their IP, they just used a VPN and bypassed it. I understand that game hacking (not account) isn't a major issue here with the anti cheat software, but its still the principal. There is no reason anyone should have to use a VPN.

The problem is already being solved. It's impossible to sell or buy gold in any significant amount and not get caught and banned. The only way to stop the problem for good is to not buy gold. There can be no market if there are no buyers.

 

If you don't get banned for buying gold immidiately, all that means is the staff hasn't caught up to you yet. Wait a week, they will.

At the least we could ban VPN usage on the new server. The chinese and everyone can still play on the old servers, but make it so we'll have a server that isn't destroyed by them.
