Was at 8k when I woke up, sat until I got to 3k, then I got kicked out of the queue somehow and now I'm at 10000. RIP. People need to log off when they are done, would really alleviate the problem. Or restart the server and boot them all.

Restarting the server just to free up 2k spots would probably do more harm than good. First, the 9k people online who get booted off then lose vs the authenticating boss and get thrown into a long queue after the server restart get screwed over, especially after they probably had to go through hours of queue just to get into the server in the first place.

It also screws over the current people in the queue who have been there for hours slowly working their way down, all to suddenly DC and then most likely get thrown into the back of queue again anyway (like you described happening to you).

Not to mention the stress on the login server when the 9k people currently in game, plus the 10k people currently in queue, all get a DC and then hammer the login server at the same time, causing more authenticating / login issues etc.

Furthermore, once the server is actually at it's cap there is huge delay / lag (not ping/ms). At least having the 2k people at the character select screen keeps the server performing well by keeping it at the cap that it actually should be at.

All that just for an extra 2k slots in game, doesn't really seem worth it imo. I woke up at 6am and hopped in queue which was around 6k ish at the time, 4.5 hours later I am 1016 in queue. I'd much rather just wait through an extra 2k more people in queue and know that when I actually get into the server, it will be lag/delay free. I mean if I already have to wait over 5-6 hours to get into the server, why wouldn't I just wait an extra hour or 2 to get into one that is going to be smooth gameplay?

It is more than just 2k slots you also have to consider that the queue is taking so long that people are starting it before they leave for work etc and that takes tons of spots in queue as well when they aren't even there either. Even on a healthy server with no queues there are probably three times the number of players on the server than its population cap. Now the reason that works is that there are prime times for people in different time zones and work schedules and everyone gets their piece of the pie. When a queue can take 6 to eight hours you start getting overlapping player bases trying to set themselves up for getting into the server and you see these large numbers that people think requires another server. We don't need another server we need to try and get the queues down. The effect of the number of people that aren't actually playing but are logged or trying to log in is inflating and exacerbating the issue. I would bet that we could get queues down to a reasonable 30min or so. Now that is all easier said than done because people don't listen/care or have any interest in cooperating with stuff like that.

You're right about the overlapping and people logging in before work etc, but the server does have a cap at around 10.5-11k . with the amount of people online and the amount in Queues you can do server restarts or brainstorm other ways to deal with afkers and ways to shorten queues but the fact of the matter is, still there are way to many people who play and want to play for one single server and you will never get Queue times down to a reasonable time. There are simply too many people with more coming because of the hype and popularity. Even if Queues were down to a consistent 2k, that's still an hour or 2 which can greatly affect raid loggers and farming later on, and still doesn't deal with the fact it's an over populated server regardless.

There's only one solution really....

I don't think the problem with persist into raiding except for the most hardcore/lucky players that were able to hit 60 very quickly, it could pretty confidently be said that almost half of the people currently or even more will probably quit within the first month.

And they will be quitting because of the queues, isn't this obvious?

I don't think that's true in the slightest. I think if the queues didn't exist we could still expect only 20% or so of the people who start characters to actually reach end game in vanilla. That 20% is probably even an optimistic estimation. I think splitting it into two servers will fix the problem now but create two underpopulated realms in the next month or so.

If you don't think a 10k queue will discourage people from playing, I have nothing more to say.

No. they wont quit, that mentality has been around since Nost gained poplarity 2 years ago. People always think a server will die down. It's been 2 plus years and we now have 3 servers on one project with the possibility of a 4th. If anything it will become more popular.

IF for whatever reason they didn't put up the 4th server. People will just do what they do now, afk and wait or learn the Queue times and just logg on hours before.

It will discourage people but I don't think that alone will be the reason for people quitting.

It certainly has grown in popularity, that is undeniable, but it is far too early to ask them to invest in another server that may be temporary. I'm sure they have been debating it all week internally and trying to get a grasp on the situation as a lot of people jump to conclusions looking to numbers that are inflated and not accurately portraying the situation. And trying to guess what happens in the future is always a slippery prospect.
