I am unaware of any mechanic that would allow this in the vanilla client. Are there any examples from other projects that anyone can point to that may have had this mechanic we can take a look at?

It would be handy and I feel you guys on this, my own character select screen is a mess.

Back in the day you used to have to pay for a character transfer, either between realms or accounts.

Totally backward way of doing it, but it was all we had.

Blizz just started that a few years ago so I don't think it's in Vanilla.
