Is the PVP spell resist mechanic blizzlike?

Recommended Posts

Vanilla was a long time ago, but from what I recollect, you did not have your spells resist as much against players of higher level.

Being blizzlike aside, the current spell resist mechanics seem to favor level over skill too much. In my experience with mage, your target being just a few levels higher than you will have majority of your spells resist. The higher level player already has an advantage in terms of gear and spell levels.

I found this old thread on Nostalrius forums but no other discussion on the subject.

How it is set up is clearly wrong. I remember being able to kill ??s easily on retail with a caster, which would be impossible on Nostalrius even if they were AFK. I assume the formula is same (+1% hit needed per level increase) than it is for NPCs, but it excludes the 10% bump per level over 3 for PCs.

However, I don't have any proof, so this is moot, but I would bet my closest relatives' lives on this is how it was (sorry dudes!) - that's how sure I am about how broken it currently is :D

Carry on.

Yeah I also remember it being very different on blizz classic servers. <??> players  could indeed be killed as a caster and It happened quiet many times.

Someone as close to your level as possible but still ?? would not resist even half of the spells. I remember it being roughly something like 20-40%

I even remember occasionally landing fear to level 60's gankers while being under level 30 and it sometimes gave a chance to escape.

NPC:s were of course different story.

+1% spell hit chance increases the base chance for a spell to land against a target by 1%

If your target is the same level as you, a spell has a base chance to hit of 96%.

If the target is +1 level compared to you: 95%

+2 levels: 94%

+3 levels: 83% if the target is a mob, 87% if the target is a player.

+4 levels: mob: 72% player: 80%

+5 levels: mob: 61% player: 73%

Continuing onward with this trend, it's likely that a skull level character (10+ levels) only has a 30-40% chance of being hit by a spell.

Not complete true that discussion .

I couldnt find an old archive, but :

At beginning resists in general and magic resist worked at another way as at later state.

I dont know when (aq or naxx) there was a change of how magic resist works because , in pve it wasnt possible to stack magic resist in some fights proper.

Then the whole system got a new formular rework and then it wasnt possible to kill much higher players.

Before you had dmg reductions instead of complete resists , then you resisted much more complete

( i knew a vid back in the days from a mage who coul farm aoe  6-7lvl mobs higher, after this rework it wasnt possible.

Even based on this, my warlock friend and I were killing an afk horde who was somewhere around 8 levels higher.  I was able to hit most of my white swings, and he cast corruption once a second for a full 1:30 and every single one resisted.  That's even with the talent points to reduce chance to be resisted.

According to my calculations, your friend should have had a 80% chance to hit that guy (with a talented corruption, anyway), so something is definitely broken.
