MM Leveling

Recommended Posts

Ive played BM quite a bit in TBC and WotLK. In Vanilla I am trying to level as Marks but have no idea what to prioritize my points. Can anyone help a newb vanilla hunter out with a build for lvl ~40 with Marks. (What really sparked this is obtaining Lupos and trying to lvl him is a pain, plus i <3 pvp)

If you got a Lupos....really, you should be leveling BM. BM + Lupos and your pet can practically solo mobs faster than most other classes. I've also got a Lupos and he just shreds shit, and I don't even have Frenzy yet.

MM is somewhat slower for leveling, and while Aimed Shot seems really enticing, it will pull aggro off your pet VERY easily.

Even for PvP while leveling, BM should be better. You can just send Lupos at the enemy player and run the fuck away while Lupos destroys them with huge crits.

Im currently lvl 40 and Lupos is not.... he literally is doing nothing and its quite a pain lvling a fresh pet as BM just Melee'n things. Hence I wanted to change for a bit then go back to BM probably.

Going MM won't increase your melee damage.

"literally doing nothing"

So he's not autoattacking, not using Growl, nothing? Seems like a player problem to me.

If you go BM, that'll buff the fuck out of his damage and you shouldn't be pulling aggro off of him as you kill lower level mobs to level him up. Just grind humanoids so you can farm cloth at the very least.

Hai thar.

gotmilk is right about Aimed Shot's threat generation being difficult for your pet to keep up, but I'm inclined to disagree about BM being better for PvP. MM can burst people down in seconds. I leveled MM / Surv with high crit and great CC with much success.

As for the Aimed Shot threat issue, a simple combo will take down most enemies, even with a pet without Growl:
Aimed Multi(r1) Feign Aimed Multi(r1)

With autos where possible between everything, just like endgame. Your pet only needs to hold the target long enough for you to get a burst combo or two off - he doesn't need to hold over sustained damage. It also REALLY helps to send your pet in ahead of you! Even an extra second could be enough for a 38 Broken Tooth with Growl to hold aggro on against an Aimed Shot.

If you don't have Growl, you can send your pet at two enemies and have it DPS one while you perform a burst combo or two on the other one. When that one's down, the first could be at 70% or so, giving your pet a good deal of threat from damage alone.

If you need pet control macros, here ya go:

Have fun.

If you level as MM, your damage will suffer unless you're using aimed/multi on cd, so you'll be drinking constantly. If you want a playstyle change, then great, but I've never found it efficient.

Yep, the damage from MM is decent, but BM does a little more damage for less effort, and doesn't require you to spam abilities. Even with just auto shot and arcane shot, I'm taking down equal-level mobs in 10-14 seconds, with 0 downtime outside of an occasional bandage for my pet.

I didn't use Serpent Sting or anything if I could help it. Just good ol' max-rank Aimed Shot and rank 1 Multi-Shot. If you use a higher rank of Multi-Shot while leveling, it's gonna OOM you much faster.

leveling i like to go 11 points into mm around lvl 25-30 for aimed shot then rest of my points into bm.

Never use serpent sting unless your fighting a rogue then and only then use rank 1 serpent sting, its a big waste of mana otherwise.

It's pretty mana inefficient for sure, but its maximum power can fit in okay in the right situation. I got caught by a 60 warrior in Searing Gorge at level 56 back on Kronos, and with Serpent Sting, Immolation Trap, and a few Bladestorms under Deterrence, I killed him in melee before he killed me.

So, y'know, that worked out at least :p

And prior to level 10, of course. That also helps.
