When Nostalrius declared their decision to institute mandatory crowd funding, I immediately deduced some inherent problems with the idea.  It was a sudden announcement and we didn't know why they did it at the time.

I must say, i'm really perplexed by laying this on the table in this fashion. You are asking us to self-organize to support this game we love and go about it in whichever way we collectively feel most effective. You will provide for us the status of the servers so we know what their current financial situation is, i.e.: this server is going to be shut down in one month if bill of X Euro are not paid. Got it...

There cannot be a loose confederacy of separate agreements and arrangements to meet the fixed cost of one enterprise. That just wouldn't be effective at all. Not only is it a lot of redundancy, it's guaranteed to lead to mishandling and mismanagement. One hand will not know what the other thirty hands are doing. Also, there cannot be funds contributed by many with nothing to apply them too. Dead money is a sure way to inspire mismanagement as well.

See, I was wrong.  Because individuals ponied up the cash on their own..like right away.  They cared JUST that much.  It never got to the point where "loose confederacies" were handling money.  At that time I was wrong.

It may not seem that this weird dude having unusual access to our servers makes not a dif.  But I'm guessing it will.   Not fond of that.  he can pontificate all he wants on streams in his over zealous joy.  Really not happy with staff handing over info to this guy.

But again I was wrong because I miscalculated the resilience of our populace.  I know such a small percentage of us actually visit the forums let alone the wastelands of reddit.  So, we are happy in our ignorance... and rightly so.   I would caution our staff (in the same light) to consider what seems appropriate now, may not in the near future, and conversely what seems trivial now, may be prophetic later. 

There are no great battles to be won, we just need solid servers...because that's all we ever really cared about.  Didn't we?

 

I tried sneaking an Asian pear in my son's lunchbox, because I love them so, and it's important to me to MAKE him love them.  To me, an asian pear is an orgasmic mixture of honey, prickly-pears, and golden apples.  So exotic and refreshing.  To him, they're a starchy potato and offensive.  He sticks his nose up.  No.  There's literally no propaganda crusade I can enact to make him love them, but oh...he will.  He will.

Ha.  You.  Your contributions to this forum so far are walking up to someone in trouble and poking them in the eye and declaring it's their fault for standing there with their eyes open.  

Sorry you didn't like or understand my prose.  I'm reading it again now and I still like it.  I had no doubt it's a little heavy for most, and that's fine. : )  I'm sure you can find a google translate for common asshole speak, so that it is reduced into a couple bullet-points that you would find agreeable.

Is there a crowd funding project that accepts donations to help with the server maintenance? I looked at the donation page, but it only had options for full months. I'd like to help, but that's outside my means at the moment.

I'm  glad you get me.  There is no created crowd-funding site that I'm aware of.   And ya know, a large part of what I'm poetically saying here is that we best avoid it.  Having individuals decide to go ahead and fund and entire chunk by themselves is the only safe way this works.  As we've seen, any other way could potentially lead to trouble.
