Some information about playstyle versus melee classes

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Been thinking about trying hunter for some time, but I've always wondered how they deal with melee classes that are able to stick to them for the most part.

Lets say a rogue jumps you and get crippling poison on you or a warrior charges and hamstrings you. Where does it go from there? Scatter shot into trap? - What if they trinket that and stays on you?

I would like some genuine advice on what to do and if you actually can do anything, if they got their PvP trinket up.

Honestly so far its the casters who give me more trouble rather than melee.

I'm not really experienced either, but my opinion is:

You don't want to waste you scatter shot just to trap him, you need to place the trap under his feet. Then if he uses trinket you just try to survive these 30 seconds before you can place another one. Use scatter shot, wing clip, counterattack and detterence if you can, aspect of the monkey (not against warriors though).

Then you trap them again, get some distance and kite.

Melee classes are annoying below 30 because of the lack of Feign Death, but the easy solution is simply getting in the habit of placing Freezing Traps behind you whenever you do anything at all. Killing a mob? Keep a trap behind you. Talking to an NPC in a guardless area? Trap behind you. Picking an herb? Eating / drinking? Getting a quest item off the ground? You know. I still do this whenever I leave the inn in Ironforge, before I mount up and head to the bank or AH.

If you have Savage Strikes and Clever Traps, warriors may regret chasing you into melee. I've 1v1'd warriors in melee the whole time with enough armor-ignoring DoTs and stuff. Your Wing Clip is very effective at keeping just enough distance for you to be out of their range, even if they Hamstring you. Yet, warriors are the easy part. Rogues and hunters could be rivals for the amount of tools each class has to screw the other one over.

Rogues tend to be rather cowardly, and in that case they're VERY easy to chase down. In my update vid that included a game of AV, I chased off a rogue who came back later to finish me, but foolishly ran the moment I ressed and DoT'd him up, preventing stealth. Another rogue simply ran right up to the graveyard location in Dun Baldar, and that was easy pickings since it was a dead end, and with my BT on yet another rogue, she split off from the other guy and fled back to her group, making it impossible to save the other rogue I was chasing. Not a Blind or anything.

If a rogue gets initiation, they have a HUGE advantage, so keep your eyes peeled. Serpent Sting is your friend against Vanish, and flare in combination with timing, positioning, and other abilities you have, can completely cripple a rogue's ability to run and hide. And engineering! Net in a flare, Track Hidden + Catseye Ultra Goggles, etc. What really screws rogues up, though, is if you do something unexpected, since they're the ones taking people by surprise 90% of the time. If you have Shadowmeld, juke them. I left my wind serpent and a Freezing Trap in a bush in Arathi Basin, and Shadowmelded at a different bush. Some dumb rogue thought I was being dumb and kept my pet at my side; walked into bush to find me, found a trap instead. Invisibility potions + shadowmeld = great fun too.

Casters tend to be more difficult to handle, but if you chat with some you'll find they hate you too. Viper Sting is a nightmare for lots of mana-users. Auto Multi Auto and their clothie ass is grass. And Broken Tooth? "Please, no." Of course, they can DoT you up and you can't really counter that, or Frost Nova and chill around your deadzone. It's risky for both of you.

You'll need to get out there and PvP if you want the experience to... well, PvP, more effectively. Hope those tips help. :)

I'm only level 44 but what people have said about melee seems right.

Casters are harder to deal with, at low levels at least warlocks are easy to kill even if they sacrifice their voidwalker.

Mages in my experience are the hardest, but to be honest I usually fuck up and viper sting too late.
