How accurate are server populations on website

Recommended Posts

The reason I ask is because there's either more players than it looks or I encountered an odd coincidence at college.

Hours ago while browsing the forums at college I found out that in the same course there was a fellow player. Now, i'm from Scotland with a population of under 5 million. With 10k average players around the world, what are the chances?

10k Players / 6+ billion humans = ~1 Player in 600k humans on the planet

If using an even gaussian distribution of Players all over the world (a fallacious assumption, but still fun to play with) ... in a population of ~5 million like Scotland there should be all of 50/6 = ~8 Players in all of Scotland.

You found 1 of the others.  Now go find the remaining 6 ... Dragonball style.

Majority of players are from Europe, NA and Asia. 10k is peak hours, not total active players. Then you should account mainly for young male individuals and given the environment OP described chances are not that slim.

I assume the online population is reported directly by the server, since it is only one server and not a cluster of servers, as it is displayed here on the site, so it should always be accurate, minute by minute.

Even if it were a cluster, one server would be handling logins, so it would know how many are online at any given time.
