Client 1.2 vs 1.12.1

is it necessary to download the same version of the client (1.2)? Or I can download for example 1.12.1 and I will connect tomorrow without any issues?

You only need 1.12.1 client.

The new server will be patched to 1.2, but that is unrelated to the client you need.
