Why the huge gap in population

2,500 per faction.  You couldn't see the other faction numbers with a /who like you can on private servers.

Are you saying the old Blizzard servers had 5,000 pop limit?.

i played PVP servers in retail since game launch and yes, they were a mess lol.

pve server got less cap but both kind of servers got their good and bad parts

PVP Good side:

-more exciting the leveling process adding the pvp element in many  zones (typical example are the fights in ashenvale between level 20-30)

-world pvp sprout like mushroom: for example an ally gank a horde and another horde jum in to defend him and so on

PVP bad sides:

-enjoy spirit rnning in hillsbrad where level 50+ allys gank horde lowbies

-this apply to alliance aswell

PVE Good sides:

-no ganks while leveling this will make you not lose time in leveling process

-Contested zone and end game zone to farm materials for consumables are not a warzone, allowing you to play without stress unless you flag yourself for pvp

PVE cons:

-no pvp unless someone flag for it

-ganks are a part of wow but not everyone likes them

Being able to play without stress is the whole reason I play on Pve realms.  I also love exploring, being able to do so without being killed is a +.

Everyone has a way to play the game.  We shouldn't look down on them or make fun of them because it's different.

If you enjoy PvP then awesome =D, if you prefer a low stress environment and prefer PvE, that's awesome too!

We need more people like you here. I don't think I have ever been in an MMO with PvP where there wasn't a faction of PvP people who would belittle everyone else.

TLDR version:

PVP "good side":

pvp

PVP "bad side":

pvp

PVE "good side"

no pvp

PVE "con":

no pvp

nice.

It's simple, some people build their ego because they think playing on PvP servers makes them hardcore.

The rest think the same as Undertanker here.

They somehow believe a game designed entirely around PvE content with frankly indefensibly bad PvP gameplay is meant to revolve around PvP.

I personally believe that PvP has never been good in WoW, as the game isn't build around it in the slightest (that part is fact not opinion), so I won't waste time on it.

I came from Dark Age of Camelot.  Their RvR is nothing like WoW PvP.  I started on a PvP server when retail launched, but changed to PvE because of friends and some rather obnoxious player sets I found on that server making it difficult to do much of anything.

But I have found that there are players who are even more obnoxious on retail's PvE servers, too.  They kill quest-givers, flight points, and even a city's bankers for gits and shiggles.

I can understand going out to fight other players out in the field, but this kind of behavior is just asshattery.

I agree that WoW doesn't have some kind of amazing PVP. I think it does have it's place and can be a lot of fun when the fights are fair and interesting. I enjoy open world scuffles with other players and have a lot of fun with BGs. But overall, picked Darrowshire not because WoW pvp is bad, but because the rather huge populations on the PVP servers is not appetizing.

My entire time on retail was spent on PVP servers (mainly Bleeding Hollow-PVP, Horde). I had a lot of fun, but that was with an almost full, regular size server (and often had queues up through end of WotLK). Having come to PVE, I do not regret it and I am also thankful because I constantly hear people talk about how their progression is seriously slowed because of ganking in a lot of cases on Elysium/ZK (on top of fighting for mobs because of high pop).
