How to feed hunter pet? Please help.

so i'm new to vanilla- but not to bc. on my fresh level 10 night elf hunter, i got my pet, and the first thing i did was go to a meat vender and buy food to feed it with ( like i did in burning crusade ). however, the pet didnt take the food i bought it, and instead it made me eat it. so, therefore, its not possible to feed your pet consumable meat, and only meat that drops off of mobs? or is there an alternative / trick ? thank you.

1. Make sure you have "Feed Pet" ability. After obtaining Tame Beast spell, there is another quest that leads you to Darnassus where you learn how to feed pets, you need to complete this quest.
2. Open your character window and switch to pet's tab, there will be icon with pet happiness. Hover your mouse over it and check the pet's diet. Some pets eat meat, others require different kind of food.
3. Drag food from your inventory to your pet or drop it on his portrait (no right-clicking - it makes YOU eat food instead, if it's edible). Alternative option is to click Feed Pet spell (cursor will highlight) and then click food in your inventory.

PS: I don't think feeding pet is different in BC, as long as you have the ability to do so.

In other words, you skipped the part where (as cited above) you go back to the Trainer to get the skill that allows you to Feed Pet.  Without the Feed Pet skill, you cannot Feed Your Pet.

And you can't feed it food from the action bar. Like if: you put your feed pet ability on the action bar. You put your food next to it. You click feed pet. You click the food. You'll eat it yourself. Poor starving pet!

If you open your quests, there should be a hunter quest that requires you to travel to the hunters hall in org. That's after you've tamed a surf crawler and armored scorpid.

Yeah - you're not done with the Hunter quests yet.  Finish those and it'll plop the rest of the spells (including Feed Pet) into the BM tab in your spellbook.  Then you use "Feed Pet" on the meat (or whatever food).
