Can someone explain the attack table to me?

Recommended Posts

Googling, I found that auto attacks and special, or yellow, attacks work differently.

Miss

Dodge

Parry

Glancing blow

Block

Crit

Crushing blow

Hit

According to what I found googling if one were to get 102.6% avoidance one would be crushing blow immune. I couldn't find info on npc special attacks so I assume it uses the player two roll system. I also assume that if one did not have 440 defense that 102.6% avoidance makes you crit immune also, at least for auto attacks as special attacks use the two roll system. Is this true?

The glancing blow is for when you are attacking a higher level mob so let's leave this off for your question.

440 Def will prevent you from being crit, yes.

Not having 440 Def but having Shield Block ability up (+75% block) will prevent you from being crit as well.

To address your inquiry about how specials come into play.

Under the effects of Thunderclap or Thunderfury you can keep shield block up for every auto attack.   However if a boss does additional abilities such as Thrash, Mortal Strike, so on and so on, then more attacks (auto or special) are consuming your shield blocks faster than your cooldown will be available.  This can then lead you open to a crit or crushing blow.   If you do have 440 def only a crushing blow would be possible on the auto in this case.   If you don't have 440 def then it is possible that one of the specials could crit if your shield block charges are consumed before the boss performs the ability.

On Nef, he attacks slow enough to handle spamming shield block to not get crit/crushed.   However, on a warrior call, Shield Block is no longer an available tool and forces you into Zerker stance.  Rather than taking 10% reduced damage, you are taking 10% increased damage (a 20% damage swing).   If you chose to not use 440 Def on Nef you better have some cooldowns on the ready for warrior calls, cause your HP can get real spiky real fast.

Bosses that people may recommend 440 Def for if your guild DPS isn't SUPER high would be:

Broodlorde (Mortal Strike), Chromag (Frenzy/Enrage), Nef (Warrior Call).   Once AQ40 is out, Twin Emps - Getting High Def is recommended as well.  Melee do a lot of traveling and threat isn't much of a concern compared to not getting hit for 8k damage.

a naked warrior with 5/5 deflection and shield block up is "unhittable" by white attacks. mob special attacks are indeed on a 2 roll system though which means that a broodlord mortal strike for example can land as a blocked crit. The only way to avoid this is to get the 440 def cap.

so yeah its true
