Docholy 4 Report post Posted December 13, 2016 So I'd love to donate to the server, but I don't exactly have the 310 EU to pay upfront. https://elysium-project.org/control/user/donate I donated to the Webhosting section, so I can feel good about my Shite postings. But paying OVH in chunks is not possible for me and I figure for most people. Is there another means to pay for the server directly? Does OVH have a smaller means for people to donate directly, such as increments starting at 5 EU? /kind regards Docholy
Zealotz 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2016 Sucks. I'd imagine there is legal issues making this impossible. Well too bad, I'll stick to giving to the web hosting. As much as I trust the dev team, putting direct links to the host, I'd not ask or give other players money.

Docholy 4 Report post Posted December 13, 2016 To clarify, you can indeed donate smaller amounts to the PayPal link provided on the donate page. If enough small donations pile up and there is a server in need of payment, those donations will be applied to game server upkeep as needed. Paying for the server directly through OVH is the most transparent way for someone to donate and our preferred method. Ah I see. Well ,that is good news.

I guess this wasn't particularly clear in the donation instructions.

Shayss 43 Report post Posted December 13, 2016 I plan to do the PayPal donation method. Seems more suitable, sort of like a personal subscription.

arbet 9 Report post Posted December 14, 2016 (edited) No, let's not have a donation wall. Don't encourage giving money, puts the server in a bad light were it to ever face legal issues. In my opinion they should lay out the server costs for the year and once they reach that point, turn off donations until the end of the year. In my opinion they should lay out the server costs for the year and once they reach that point, turn off donations until the end of the year. 900 EU a month cost is 10800 EU a year. If we as a community do not encourage people to give money how else do you propose funds come in? Its 100% voluntary and won't give the person donating anything. Its just out of the love of the server. I don't see how it would put the server in a bad light. As far as shutting down donations at a certain point, they made it clear IF donations make it that 3 months are paid the donations close. I don't understand your logic here man. You want to somehow open donations to 10800 EU for a year of server cost (not including the 1920 EU yearly web-hosting cost) without encouraging a community to donate? If a paywall gets people hyped to donate more power to them, they get nothing from it. As far as legal issues, how is this different than the legal issue of asking for donations? It won't change anything, btw paywall is for in-game character names. Not like your IRL info.

Have you any idea how difficult and time consuming it is to maintain and develop a project this scale? What do you expect from the devs and staff? They need the money for living like anybody else. Do you expect them to go full time job and after that to work on the servers in the night completely exhausted? Nobody will do this long term. The project needs money. The more money from donations, the higher quality of the server. Simple as that. Not enough money = project is going down sooner or later.

They will not face legal issues just because they have a donation button. Warmane makes a ваууTON of money, and they have a cash shop+15k+ people online all the time. Every single server gets letters, nost will get it monthly too. Also, for blizzard and every retail player we're already "pirates", so i don't know why you would worry about being in the "bad light".
arbet 9 Report post Posted December 14, 2016 (edited) I didn't say remove donations, I said do not have REWARDS for donations. i.e. to make the staff not look like profiteers. I don't think this server will be taken to court but with the demand for legacy servers growing seemingly exponentially, and retail WoW collapsing in on itself, it IS possible Blizzard may do this in the future. And if Blizzard were to ever take them to court, they would be making the argument that Elysium is profiting off of Blizzard's work... this needs to stay non-profit, and having some massive celebration of how much money they're getting would not be good. I'm not a lawyer just giving my opinion. Edited December 14, 2016 by arbet
