Help! My pet is running away

I'm a level 12 hunter and my pets have all run away. I check to see their happiness level and it is always green. I feed them the correct food, and even food that is high level. I've had a pet leave within 1 minute of me feeding it. Some pets stay a little bit longer. I'm not quite sure what to do. Maybe this isn't a bug? I asked other hunters and they seem to think it is. Thank you.

It's not normal, no. Try taming a pet, get its happiness up and then logout.  Maybe logging out will make the pet stick.

I tried it, but it didn't work. I've also tried different kinds of pets. All not working.

Did you complete the taming quest you first get at lv10? The same thing was happening to me (because I didn't read the quest, I mean how reads the quests notes! LOL) because I kept taming other creatures instead of the ones I need to complete the quest. 

If not, then good luck cause I know that can be super annoying.

lol I literally just had a pet for about 20 minutes before it ran away. I was feeding it meat.

Don't look at the happiness meter on the pet info screen. It's bugged and always shows as happy.

 

Get "PetFeeder" addon, it'll properly show your pet's current mood. Most unitframe addons properly show it as well. I THINK the default UI pet unitframe shows it, but I'm not sure.

 

The only reason your pet will randomly disappear from you is if you didn't feed it enough. If you just tamed a pet, it will be at the lowest loyalty level, and you have to feed it like every 5-10 minutes or it runs away.

One thing to point out is that feed pet adds a buff to your pet that lasts x amount of seconds where your pet gains x amount of happiness per second.

 

So feeding him 10 meats is great, but don't spam it. Use one, wait for the buff to end, then do it again.

This is with the default UI.  use the smiley face you see there. Yellow (content) is ok, but you should always keep him green (happy)

If you never feed your pet he will abandon you in 10 minutes. If you feed your pet to complete happiness, he will be hungry again VERY soon.  This will annoy you, but once he starts gaining Loyalty levels he'll demand less food. Loyalty 6 Best friend, your pet won't need food for hours.  For a new tame, you gotta watch him constantly, and feed him nearly a whole stack of food before he reaches loyalty 2. 

Also, when you feed him, don't use him to fight until his feed pet buff expires. Dots on the pet will also cancel the effect. You'll see him gaining happiness in your combat log.

I personally like to keep two stacks of the best food that the pet can eat. You will never use the full two stacks before it hits loyalty level 6, (unless you constantly let him die). Addons such as Luna Unit Frames are very good at reflecting pet's happiness and if you always keep it in the green, it will never run away.

Also, if you dismiss the pet right after the tame you will not lose more than 50 happiness. (Pet happiness ticks at 35 for 10 ticks for best level food, giving a maximum of 350 happiness per feed) If you want to see this for yourself, watch your combat log as you feed it.
