What constitutes as multi-boxing?

Recommended Posts

I was summoned to GM Island 2 nights ago and questioned about Multi-boxing. I was only given a warning but after discussing it with some guild mates I would really like a clarification on the rules. My girlfriend lives with me and also plays on Elysium, her computer is stationed next to mine. She often complains that I out level her toons which makes the game less fun for her, so, in an effort to mitigate that, she would log onto her account and set her toon to follow mine before she would go do other things. Some guild mates told me that multi-boxing requires using a program that stacks WoW programs and that what I was doing was not actually multi-boxing.

Can I get a clarification on this rule and is what I was doing considered a bannable offense?

Hello Poe, here is the section about Multiboxing in our Terms of Use:

Quote

Multiboxing is not allowed and refers to playing multiple characters simultaneously. Whether this is done via 3rd party software, alt-tabbing between instances, or by running multiple machines, does not matter.

The only exception is that you may have up to two characters in the same major or goblin city temporarily, for trading, crafting, conjuring, portalling or using the Neutral Auction House to transfer items/gold to an alt.

As it states, you don't necessarily need to be using 3rd party software to be multiboxing.

If what you state you were doing is what you're actually doing then that i believe that is allowed.  It does look highly suspicious from the gms perspective tho.  I assume they are 2 different accounts.  If you're doing that on 1 account it's not allowed.

If your gf puts her character on /follow, then you are technically multiboxing. And account sharing.

Helping her in the dungeon - with her playing the account - is completely fine. Just avoid the /follow thingy.

This the first I've heard of this exact scenario.  Hypothetical question:  let's say you're 60 and your friend is lvl 20.  You're playing 2 diff accounts in 2 diff cities.  You form a 2 person party and the lvl 20 puts the lvl 60 on follow and the lvl 60 proceeds to go around killing mobs while the lvl 20 comes back every 10 min or so to make sure they don't go afk and is still on follow.  Is that allowed?  Op claims to do this except the players are in the same house.

If you have character running around in the world (of warcraft) that is not under your direct control, that's considered automation. Here's an easy test: If a GM ports you both to GM Island and says, "Prove me to me right now that this is two separate accounts," and you can't do it, then it's multiboxing/automation.

Trying to lawyer your way around the intent of the rules probably won't end well.
