timk 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2017 (edited) I'm a data center technician, and I am interested in knowing what sort of servers and hardware this Vanilla WoW is running on. I don't need to know about the software, I have no interest in trying to hack into it, but it'd be cool to know what sort of server hardware is supporting this game. Server models, number of servers, CPUs, RAM, hard drives, connection type and speed? Thanks! :) Edited September 17, 2017 by timk

timk 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2017 (edited) From what I have seen, it seems like all the servers are over in Europe or somewhere over there. As a data center technician, I am capable of setting up a rack mount server at home, on a Verizon FIOS connection. I was thinking that having some USA based servers would help the lag time, are we able to volunteer servers for that? But I have no experience in databases, or Oracle, or SQL, or whatever the game runs on, so if the people running this game were able to remote access my server and load up whatever is needed, I could work with them on that. Is this a possibility? Essentially, I would handle the hardware side here, and they would do all the software stuff. Guest Report post Posted September 18, 2017 Because the Project can surely trust a random person on the internet to host a server on their home internet connection with their unsupported hardware not bound or protected by any SLA, security, or infrastructure in case of hardware failure.
Funktion1 2 Report post Posted September 18, 2017 I'm not sure on the specifics, but I think if you physically sit parts of the server on US soil there will be legal issues.

The servers aren't in the US for a reason.
timk 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2017 Ah, ok. Well, I thought I would make the offer, I don't know the details of what is where and Blizzard being all pissy about it. You'd think Blizzard would clear out a few of their older servers and charge people for a separate account to play Vanilla WoW on their completely authorized system, that is easy money for Blizzard. Everything is already in place to do it right, because they have already done it. Ever since they let Activision buy them, they went all corporate, and ceased being a game company for the gamer, now it is all about making the stockholders happy.

But that's not going to happen any time soon, 'cause it would mean they'd openly admit to public that "Hey, We've fucked up on the way we developed the game, Here's Vanilla 'cause newer expansions suck." Think about the shitstorm if vanilla would become more popular then the later version..
