Which class to start fresh with?

Recommended Posts

If you decide on warrior on a fresh server,  herb/alch is going to be your best best, hands down and is worth the 2-3 extra hours in starting zone to get your herbing to 75+.   (it will take that long on a crowded starting zone at least)

I'm not playing on the fresh server, because I don't like PvP servers.

I'm going to be starting fresh on the Nost PvE server.

So I guess yeah, that's also a good reason to go herb/alch, because I won't need to craft gear, I can just buy stuff off the AH.

I don't know why so many say leveling a Rogue or Warrior is tough - with a few instance quests you're flying.  My first char on Nost PvP was a Rogue who blew through levels just because of a few weapons; Wingblade, Outlaw Sabre, Vanquishers Sword, Sword of Omen, Thrash Blade - they're all easy to get and change the melee game drastically.

Simple things like picking Agi/Stam, Str/Stam gear while keeping bandaging up will reduce your downtime to nil.  Warriors can instance all day every day if they wanted to, Rogues drop mobs in <10 seconds once instant poison is learned.

The only tedious things to level are tedious specs - Resto Druid, Disc Priest, Prot War, etc

As always, play the class you enjoy - that'll make 1-60 the easiest

It's tough for them because they charge in and overpull most of the time. Pro-tip time! If you level a meelee class, pull all mobs from range, it will save you SO much trouble.

Warrior is hard because levels 1-35, you have autoattack and heroic strike. You don't get any (good) instant abilities (except Overpower, which only procs off of dodges) until Whirlwind at 36. It's painfully boring and slow, much slower than other classes. It gets a little better once you get Slam at 30, as well as getting someone to boost you for your Whirlwind Axe, but for the most part you're just autoattacking and using Heroic Strike, and hoping that another mob doesn't aggro to you.

Once you hit 40 and start getting some decent gear, yeah, it becomes easier. But before that, it's pretty dull. Getting miss/dodge/parry with a 2h weapon is cancer. Having single mobs take down 50-60% of your health is also cancer. Being one of the weakest PvP classes (at earlier levels) is very cancer.

My last run on Nost was with a Warrior - did the 1-60 thing a few times as Arms over the years but decided to try Fury dual wield and was surprised how effective it is.

More frequent dodges with dual wield lets you overpower 2x per fight typically, there's no problem living in battlestance as fury spec while leveling.  Even with the increased miss % I notice rage generation was much higher compared to 2 hand - as you said missing once or twice with a slow 2 hander is a pain.

If anyone is worried about leveling a Warrior I'd suggest shaking it up a bit, try dual wield Fury out

Yeah, when I leveled a warrior on Nost, I ended up dual-wielding from 22 until I got the Whirlwind Axe; it wasn't as bad as everyone says it is. The reduced hit chance is offset by more Overpowers and no longer wanting to kill yourself when your slow 2h gets parried or missed.

Fury however, pretty sure people have always known that it's the better choice for leveling. Arms isn't bad, Fury is just better, mostly because of sit-critting to get 100% uptime on Enrage, free +25% damage.

Definitely enhancement shaman with mining and engineering on fresh pop server!

Oof! That was the 2nd char I leveled to 60 and it was really painful :(

Repeating an instance you don't have quest for is a really bad way to attempt to gain exp for levels.   It will take 4-6 hours of instance running compared to what you can do in 2 hours so solo grinding.

Yeah, you will find dungeon groups super easily as a tank, but they give shet exp unless you have quests.

Tested a few classes to try something new. Rolling elemental shaman. I want to be able to shift to support yet still have dps fun pre-raid. Decent benefit also being able to roll on most any caster shaman gear in raids due to being a hybrid and not having many sets when stuck healing. Got one nearly 40 now on K2 and mana management is proving fine once you can get 3 or so nature wrath pieces. Leveling 1-20 was easy as elemental. 20-30 seemed to slow down due to mana usage and lower dps slow burning combine with waning pre-35 water quality. Seemed to pick up again very nicely after 30 and into later 30s largely due to increasing talents and gear collection.

Just did a SM Cath run a few times and worked like a charm. We kept getting combat state bugs and I did one run almost entirely without being able to drink. Managed it pretty good to be honest. Didn't oom entirely once. With a little more than 50 nature damage on gear at lvl 38 lightning bolt does 630+ crit and lucky windfuries between casts keeps dps high even if saving mana near end of fight on trash ( I don't solo with WF as melee is only used on clean up and wf won't proc enough). Can see fights as high as 200+ dps at times. Will slow well under 100 on slow burns and no wf procs however but at least shamans have melee back up much like priests have decent wand damage. Typically 100-150 dps though if left to full dps cycles even against the end bosses that are slightly higher level.

They sure can pump out some serious damage when mana dumping ... damn. Cant wait for the mana per 5 and more spell power though. Will make life easier late game. It's about wanting a dps/support class. If you want a dps caster go mage or warlock.
