Gold and Levelservice - spamming is getting out of control.

 

Today i got 4 (now ignored) whispers in 2 minutes

How does spam throttle work? Does it literally auto detect gold sellers whispers?

 

Correct. It does this by using a list of known gold-selling sites and automatically blocking those messeges that contain them, it also triggers of several key-words and sentences used by gold-seller spam. There is ofcourse the very small risk of false negatives, but simply saying the word "gold" wont flag you in the addon so you can rest easy. I've been using this for a few days now and the spam is NOTICIBLY less (although not 100% gone).

That addon seems to be blocking people's messages for no reason. (I turned on the setting to show me the blocked messages but in greyed text)  Realized 90% of what it was blocking was just normal chat.  So i uninstalled it right after

That addon seems to be blocking people's messages for no reason.

 

I think what you see is caused by the "remove duplicated messages until gap timeout" feature, if it is enabled.

This is very useful, because people looking for groups or wanting to sell items often kind of spam their messages and

with this feature you can make sure you don't see the same message twice in a set amount of time.

Of course the more little this gap time is, the more the addon will filter "normal" messages.

But you won't loose any normal message this way, because the addon will let you see the message for the first time, it will only filter the next ones if they are the same and within a time window set by you.

Basically it helps you keep the chat channels more clear without loosing any message.

 

Laytya, thank you for your patch! I wanted to ask the original author to implement the 'WIM patch' but you were faster.

 

Also...I saw this error message generated by SpamThrottle, I don't know if it's a real problem or can be ignored:

"Interface\Addons\SpamThrottle\SpamThrottle.lua:1185: attempt to call method 'AddMessage' (a nil value)"

Dude, it blocks not just gold sellers, but also spammers, when someone starts stupid game with "anal [link]" or blessed you know what, or just spams in world channel with LFG every 30 seconds, SpamThrottle is your best friend. You can reduce this period to 3 and then ST will just filter out matches in list.

For the first few days it was whispers from accounts with random characters in them, but yesterday I saw a big shift.  Most of the whispers were from higher level characters with legit sounding names, and I assume they are compromised accounts.  It's a little sad to see people having their accounts taken over by gold sellers.

 

Do everyone a favor and don't be tempted to guy gold.  Vanilla was supposed to be hard, we were supposed to be happy and poor.  If nobody is buying gold because it doesn't make the experience any better, then there's no market.  If there's no market, there's no advertising.  This problem goes away if people are unwilling to cheat themselves out of a good game experience.

But I didn't have the duplicate spam filter on.  Also the people it was blocking didn't have any of the keywords listed on the addon, and some of the guys wasn't even spamming or have said anything for the past 10 mins.  One guy was trying to ask me a question and couldn't so i had to relog to disable the addon lol

This GW whatever spam is getting completely out of control. There are times I'll tab out for a few minutes, and come back in to three or four WIM windows. It's ridiculous, almost like the staff doesn't even do anything. Worst part is, they completely space out the entire URL they whisper you, so you can't even properly filter it.

The gold spammers are going apeshit because of being able to hack so many peoples' accounts with the stolen login details from other servers.

 

Once all those accounts get banned/recovered, it should go back down again.

You are using the wrong ST.   Get the one with WIM support.  Problem solved.  I promise.

SpamThrottle worked great for a couple days, but there were 2 that got through to me today.  So as a warning to all, DON'T do what I did, and that was this:   Add a new filter word to the list, then send tells to a friend to test that new filtered word.  I sent a few whispers to one person to test SpamThrottle settings and now I can't whisper to anyone, nor can I talk in guild.

All I know is I installed it 2 days ago and haven't had a single gold spam since.

How about making delay like half of second, and check several line messages like if at least one line of message hits the filter?
