Where is it at? Elysium has literally been offline every single day for the last 8 days straight....sometimes for hours and with little to no communication from the staff. I don't want this to turn into a flame post because i know some things are out of their control. Still....sure seems like this server gets "ddos" more than any other....is it REALLY ddos or just a problem with the server itself....at the very least we should have a prompt (30 min isn't unreasonable) response from somebody in the staff....otherwise it starts to give the impression nothing is being done.

I am convinced that we could not play at all if nothing had been done against DDoS.

I guess they use a DDoS-protection that dynamically increases traffic volume for server nodes. I don't know the price they pay, but even the cheaper offerings are 100 dollar or more per month. We could not play at all if they did not have such a service.

You could make the server DDoS immune if you had the money like Amazon.com, which just uses thousands of dollars each month to protect their servers with more bandwidth than the DDoS-attackers can shoot at them.

But don't forget, that this is a voluntary project without the money to pay for such extensive services.

 

Do they sometimes use DDoS-attacks as an excuse for other problems? Maybe, but I doubt that. DDoS is a huge problem for each person operating with a static server cluster. Meh.

ZK has always had less than Darrowshire, and both have more than Blizzlike (limited to 2500 max). ZK has over 3000 on weekends, which is a little too many for me.

You never played Vanilla on retail, and it shows (nub).

Happened again this afternoon... Elysium went down hard while ZK was just purring along.

I'd say Zeth'Kur has 99.9% uptime while Elysium is at something like 98% the past two weeks. That level of downtime on Elysium is frustrating and unacceptable for me, and part of why I switched to Zeth'Kur. Hopefully they institute permanent queues on Elysium to limit the downtime. It's just horribly unstable at 8000+ people online at once when Vanilla was designed for 2000-2500 max.

I never at all said that it didn't have more than Blizzard retail realms or that it was Blizzlike.. You never succeeded Elementary school, & it shows (m8).

Not true. I played on ZK for two weeks before it had more online than Darrowshire for the first time. It had more only at launch, but never in February. The basic point is that it isn't losing population relative to Darrowshire today.

Not sure if English is your first language as the proper term is to "graduate" elementary school, not "succeed" elementary school. I went to major universities for both undergraduate and graduate school, by the way. Thanks for asking!

Are you serious? 98% uptime for a free service is unacceptable?

As to why there are constant DDoS attacks on Elysium, this is pretty normal for MMO private servers. It happens in the UO community as well. It even happens with popular Minecraft servers. Other, less popular server owners think they will gain population by DDoS'ing their competitors. And truth be told they do get a slight bump in population when they do this. That's why they continue to do it. But if you leave the popular server for a less popular one all that happens is that server gets popular and starts getting DDoS'ed.

Just learn to live with it. And give the Elysium staff some time to learn how to run this massive project. It takes time, and they are making good progress.

The really kekly thing here is that he meant it the way I interpreted it, because English is not his first language. The typo would have been if he meant it the way Hurricane2 (likely) misinterpreted it.
