will special characters be allowed in names?

Recommended Posts

I know some servers allow special characters in names, some don't. Nostalrius did allow it.
I have a feeling names are going to be gobbled up very fast and it would be cool to know we can keep our names with a little twist.

By special characters I mean letters like:   ë  ï  å

I hope not. What is the first guy's name?

I think that accented chars are in a differnet category than the Cyrillic chars but yea the gold sellers name is retarded.

em...diacriticals mean just as much or little, in one's native tongue as anyone else's language.  There's no difference between a string of meaninglessness romanic characters "xfrt" and a representation of accents.  None whatsoever.

I wasnt talking about a different alphabet, but diacriticals.

oh

but yea the arguement people have is it's annoying whispering/reporting/whatever someone with accents in their name because they can be annoying to type on a us keyboard layout

If you use the EU/US client then you can't actually see player names that has cyrillic or chinese letters in them, they will show up as completely blank, as if they had no name at all.

The first's guy name is not in Cyrillic, it's not allowed, it's using the symbols OP talking about (same as second name). That's why I'm against non-English symbols in name. They are not working for everyone.

No I'm pretty sure it's the same rules as the original game, i.e. you can use í, é, ó which is completely fair given that they are real characters in European languages. I can see the appeal in banning them but that won't happen.

I really hope not.  One of my bad memories of retail before I left was seeing chars with names like Shádow Shadów Shádów because their favorite *very* original name was taken.

I do not remember a single char name in vanilla having accent marks.  Maybe I just rolled with the right crowd, but I think it was against the rules.  The rules were pretty strict, even requiring that names do not break immersion, hence the famous "Roflcopter" example.

IMO it would not be blizz-like.  But since our friends in France created Nostalrius, it is up to them whether or not they want to sacrifice their full language for a blizz-like naming convention.  They have my respect either way.

It was like that on retail vanilla it's not so bad. Yea ваууing annoying i had to deal with it to. But eh, some people really like a name. Orginal or no, i mean just add em to your Friends list if you hate em or love em enough for it.

Diacriticals are parts of people's real names.  It's like saying I prefer to not use the letter O.  I don't even know if you could script the server to not include the full alphabet that is on your keyboard.  All of these accent marks are in your system.  They just aren't on the top level because then your English keyboard would be four times bigger : )

I did find some irritation myself dealing with those characters, because on mac it's a series of keystrokes to find the alt characters and not a number sequence like windows uses.

Oh I do suppose on US realms they did disable the accents....I don't remember seeing any.

I just always felt that it's a pain in the попа trying to communicate with people using names with special characters that aren't on my keyboard. I know it can be done, but I'm not trying to learn every combination for every special character. I like being able to /w __name here___.   I don't even befriend people with funny names like that, it's too much of a pain to communicate. Which, I know what you're thinking - just open your friends list, click their name, and click whisper. I'd rather just not bother.

Edit: For clarification, I can easily type a ridiculous name like /w qwdqwifhqwf faster than I can open my friends list, click their name, and click whisper. I strongly respect the language originating from the server owners country, but Vanilla is nice and simple - would love to keep it that way.

Just an opinion :)

accents were allowed on EU realms but not US realms back in vanilla.

I think they changed it to allow more on both EU & US in Cataclysm.

From a server side perspective, it's very simple to toggle this on/off or choose which type of region letters should be allowed

Ya it was hard for me too.  I think many of the people that would prefer to use accents in ways that are famliar to them, purposefully don't use them for this very reason.  And then there's the complete idiots that use an umlaut on every freaking letter and then, Im sure they can't figure out why no one will group with them : P

I had a list on Nost, of things to NOT do.  One of them was to NOT make a character name you knew you'd regret, but then go ahead and level it up anyways.

I personally like special characters. I hope they allow it. :P

I personally like Cyrillic characters. But I care about those who can't read and type them.
