I don't mind the special characters. There's always people that badly wants some specific name and in case that it's taken, they'll be able to anyway. But the Asian or Russian letters should be removed as it would just be a plain text for majority of server population.

No I'm pretty sure it's the same rules as the original game, i.e. you can use í, é, ó which is completely fair given that they are real characters in European languages. I can see the appeal in banning them but that won't happen.

On Nostalrius, English was the only accepted language in server channels. Guild, party and /s were anything goes. But general, world, localdefense, worlddefense, and trade were English only.

Special characters are pretty much just a free pass for people to exploit. So if you plan on exploiting, you know what to do.

I'm honestly surprised by how upset some people are getting over this.  If you want to stand your ground against people who use ë instead of e, just don't add them to groups, or tell them where to meet you and add them when you can click on them. It's actually not that hard to find a person through /who with a special character as long as their first letter doesn't start with one.  And honestly how many people in the past have you tried reporting but couldn't because of a special character? As I said before I played from Vanilla to WOTLK and never once ever had that issue.

There are certain names I've used through the years and sometimes I've had to use special characters and it's never negatively effected my ability to make friends or join a group.  I don't think the situation is as dire as some are making it sound.

You obviously did not play on Nost, your argument is invalid. There were thousands of people using special characters on Nost. I never saw this problem on retail.

I did play on Nost, both servers. Never had a problem there. I guess results may vary, and that goes both ways.

I like to keep my character names as basic as basic can be. I don't like having the name i wanted already taken.
Create new character: Joseph: That name already exists

Just to clarify what I meant with my previous post, this is what it looks like when a player with chinese letters in his name whispers you in chinese:

 

 

if you shift click between the brackets then you still won't know his name, only his class & level. if you try to shift click to put it in a chat window you will also get nothing.

You also forget that you can't claim its a fast run if its the tank your looking for. If yah get a crap tank or a slow tank there goes the fast part! I always laughed hard when saw people shouting for a pug tank for a fast run, the tank is the #1 spot to decide if its fast or not!

 

I sure hope no special characters are allowed also. People need to be more creative with thinking of a name then just copying the same nonsense 1001 others are wanting.

You don't actually have to interact with them at all, Banezilla and Xykaru. There will be more than enough players on all three realms that you won't be desperate to invite Gandálfö for your Zul'Farrak run.

We shouldn't have to rely on the potentially high population to find enough people to communicate with, desperate or not. Interaction is the reason we play Vanilla, I'm not sure why you'd suggest deferring from it.

Btw not everybody is interested in the PvE realms nor the superior latter.  My motto is - if they have a funny name, then they are nothing but an acquaintance on the spot.  I don't take the extra time to bother diddling with fancy names. I am a typist. I don't need to fiddle with friends list to find people - unless they have names with characters not immediately accessible on my keyboard. Albeit I know all of the numerics, it's just not appropriate to dance with such unnecessary inconveniences. We can always not interact, but if I want to stop interacting I would just evolve, losing my desire for accomplishment, social interaction, and general social atmosphere, joining Retail ( which I never will. Vanilla 4lyf).

 

   I don't really care about the fancy characters. I just know that I won't go out of my way to join or help people with them in their name. -shrug-

Shunning can go both ways, you don't exactly seem like an open-minded person, you won't help someone based on a name..If being on the receiving end of your help requires you meet a certain criteria, then it goes to show that your motives in helping people at all are not coming from any place of compassion. 

So I ask you what is it that people are missing out on by you not wanting to be their friend?

It looks like you got your way anyways, Elysium caved and you safe spot is safe from scary letters for now.

I agree, Especially if they are claiming this is a legit return of Nostalrius.  A lot of us put a lot of time and care into our toons over there only to have the names taken away because people suddently can't stomach an apostrophe over a letter.   If they want to change the rules they should save that for the fresh Elysium server instead of tarnishing Nost.
