Media Coverage of Nostalrious. We're gonna need a bigger server

Recommended Posts

They should not have make the announcement early November but releasing the server mid-end of december. They should have worked quietly on the project, announce it when they were settled quite well and release it shortly after. All these weeks have created way too much hype... way too much.

Can't wait for the pop to thin out after couple weeks/ months. Especiall I believe many of the post Cata players will quit quite soon when they realize how time consuming the game truly is if you want achieve anything - even going to a low lvl dungeon can be quite time consuming.

"wtf, I am 40 now and don't get my mount cuz it's 90g but i only have 3g... WTF" - 6 lvls later: "WTF I am 46 now, still no mount and am still 37g away from it, and even when i get all that g, I will be blank afterwards. Vanilla sux, no free epix" - logs out, never comes back xD.

Oh boy.  And don't forget the IGN article and PC Gamer article as well.  Not to mention the massive mmo-champion thread which I know for a fact has drawn some vanilla enthusiasts out of the closet.

I think the sky is turning black, because it might be possible that Blizzard's views will align with reality for once; it MIGHT be possible that they begin to understand the urgency and unrelenting demand for vanilla.  Imagine that!

I don't trust blizzard to handle legacy servers properly. They are driven solely by greed, they are incapable of putting out anything genuine now. I hope they stay far far away from legacy servers forever.

Yeah it's true.  It could go to either extreme:  truly respecting the original work, or turning it into a cash shop theme park.  I think they're equally capable of doing either of these, which is kind of scary, because to even consider the second option is stupid and reckless as hell.

I would rather they stick with the current server plans and just weather the storm.  We will have many months (years?) to play and things will normalize and become a lot more playable in time.  My concern is having a 4th server would just mean they have to merge later, or refuse to merge and mess with people's progression and characters and then we have a dead server.  Patience young padawans.

Is anyone else worried that too many people will try to hop on one server? It's in the news for gods sake. Maybe they will end up releasing another server at launch. What are your thoughts?

I think the new server will certainly be crowded that is why I'm going to play on the PvE server. I'm sure I"ll roll a character on the Freshy Fresh Server as well but my main focus will be on the PvE server.

Maybe at launch. The hype will die down for sure.

Haha, that's what they said last time. And they are still saying it at blizz HQ and on the retail forums.

You think it will die down but it won't ;). The more there are the more the server will lag, sure, but also the less blizzard can ignore the demand for vanilla.

The hype will die. I think the server will remain quite popular for a long while, there's definitely a niche crowd demanding it. And that's cool.

Don't put too much hope on Blizzard btw, if they ever release legacy servers it will be after retail WoW dies for good. ;(

Hype will die down and people will get to lvl 30 and say f this.. go back to easy mode

Anyone in it as part of the "ohh shiny" bandwagon crowd will definitely quit by then.  But there are quite a few of us who are in it for the joy of simply playing the game we remember that no longer exists.  You could stab us in the face repeatedly and we'd never leave.

Ehh... If Nost was able to manage their old server I think we're in good hands.

Uhhh, you know it got shut down right? David vs Goliath - we know who would win in reality if Goliath truly decides to fight.

Live your dream people and hide from the truth. But the truth is that the chances are really high that the whole thing is going to get shut down quite quickly. It was shut down already and it happened when we all did not expect anything like this. The people who say "we're going to ignore everything" are quickly going to change their mind once they hold an accusation letter in their own hands. You do not want be sued by a several billion dollar heavy company as a private person. You will lose everything and pay millions for copyright infrigements, brand abuse etc.. They can pay the best lawyers anywhere on the world to get them work for them. I have worked in a billion company myself several years and they do run whole departments to protect their brands whatever it may cost. With all that hype, Blizzard has to react, they are literally forced to. Do you really think we can poop on their heads and they won't do anything about it. "You think you [can], but you [can't]" xD

I hope this last more than a couple of months. Blizzard already shut down Nost. This is getting even more attention, now, and it's not even live yet.

Alphaconstruct

Absolutely. It won't last long tho any anyone who played Nost back then would have to agree!

Blizzard didn't shut down Nost. Nost shut down Nost to further the legacy movement. Ever WoW private server receives C&D, all of them ignore it and are still up and running. (Some for many many years)

Blizzard is greedy but they aren't dumb. Look at the backlash they received from the Nost situation. People are already unsubbing retail at record rates, a lot of those players play both retail and private servers, do you think they want to further piss off the hand that feeds?

Even if they so somehow shut down Elysium, we will just up and move to the next server in line. And if servers will follow Nost lead and hand over characters our toons can live on forever. Blizzard does not have it in them to fight. We are Goliath in this situation.

Not that I disagree that there was some backlash for Blizzard in terms of PR and all that, but can you state your sources regarding sub numbers?

Furthermore, the beauty of this arrangement with Elysium is that Blizzard has no real legal way of forcing a shut down, and I believe it widely unlikely that they would take illegal routes to achieve it, so there is really no need to speculate how a blizzard-enforced shutdown event would go. Now, if for some reason, the team behind this project decides to shut it down, that's a whole different discussion.

.

While blizzard is hiding their numbers (for obvious reasons) it's not hard to read between the lines. For the first time they've have to implement CRZ in current content because there aren't enough players. And the players are not happy about this. Also if you read the forums you see just how many guilds have collapsed due to players leaving. Also looked around this link it's pretty interesting : http://www.warcraftrealms.com/weeklyactivity.php?serverid=-1

I disagree, I haven't seen as many people satisfied with retail as I have with Legion, for a long time. But that may just be because we know different people or frequent different internet places.

That graphic does show a decline in activity, and it is indeed a way of analyzing what little we can. However it only analyzes activity during prime time, as it states above it, and it only shows horde. The Alliance version is a little more uplifting - link.

My point is, we can't really tell if there is indeed a serious decline or not. It is obvious that a few months after an expansion pack releases some players drop off (my case, for example), but that doesn't necessarily translate into a massive decline in subscription numbers.
