So who you think is DDoSing

Recommended Posts

I'm going to go with an irrationally venomous pro-Legion blizzkid fanbase.  They have the strongest motive out of any possible culprit, as they're collectively shitting themselves that this will get big enough that Blizzard will take notice and reconsider the steps taken that made WoW into a daily login facebook rpg.

Easy: Pignos, Memefall and some salty bad servers aaaand maybe Blizzaaaaard XD

Rival pservs is possible, but why would Blizzard bother, when they could just escalate their limp-wristed monthly C&D's to full fledged prosecution?  Plus they haven't even bothered to stop all the nostalrius/elysium advertisement on their own official forum.  They've been doing the bare minimum to protect their IP this whole time.

DDoS is used as a commercial knife to threaten the jugular of the service you are providing. So typically you would launch your DDoS and follow it up with a polite ransom demand to pay 'x' or else the attacks will continue. Some companies pay, most don't and just re-calibrate their defence mechanisms. It won't be coming from another Pserver, nor Blizzard, nor anyone else with a vested interest in Warcraft.

The only other feasibility is that it might come from companies with an investment in gold farming, but as VPN's are permitted it's not that either. It's actually not in their interest to have these DDoS attacks.

End result is that Elysium will upgrade their defence mechanisms over time. It's a tough learning curve and people should give them some slack.

Unpopular opinion:

DDoS is an easy scapegoat that can be used to calm the playerbase when you know your server can't handle the stress it's getting. It divides the focus from the developers to an external source while they're working it out.

Or it might be an actual attack, who the вау knows. There are reasons for it.

we can only guess

but the way the forums were lagged the вау out yesterday for no real reason I am more likely to think that a huge DDOS campaign is ensuing.

And yet the DDoSing won't make their balls drop any faster. The attacks are always a temporary inconvenience after which the players move on playing the game anyway and forget all about it while the attackers are still salty douche bags.

We may lose a few hours of gameplay, but in the end they're the ones who really lost in being dealt a brain plagued with anger issues and a skewed view of reality where people actually give a rat's попа about their existence.

I think no one.

Since 3-4 years every time something goes down , DDoS is the "excuse".

The server is lagging , can't handle so much people.

"My card doesn't run today ... must be DDoS ! "

At least now ppl aren't showing those "honeypot" maps and showing it as "proof" of DDoS :P

I mean I see ppl stating "legion kids are DDoSing us" "other private servers" ... are they really paying up for a botnet to be constantly Flooding ?
Then it's a really bad one cause the server doesn't go down , and all of it's network remains unaffected.

Doesn't seem like a DDoS

I'd guess Kronos or crestfall. Both have probably the most to gain from this failing. From what I can gather and what I've heard though it was a pretty shitty DDoS attempt.

I seriously doubt it. Anyway at least Nost/Elysium has anti-ddos. If you have lived at Kronos-2 era, you would see how it is to be ваууed by ddos :P

Crestfall won't be launched until Q1/Q2 2017. There is no reason for them to DDoS Elysium for 3-6 months just to ensure they get decent population numbers. There are more than enough players out there to fulfil both servers. Kronos was under attack for a couple of months by a particularly nasty batch of DDoS attacks, are we to blame Elysium, Nostalrius or Crestfall for that too?
